Forty-four Ionic columns and twelve pilasters define the Pasaje de Lodares in Albacete. The passage connects Calle Mayor with Calle Tinte and was built in 1925 to a design by architect Buenaventura Ferrando Castell in a postmodern historicist style. The street connection, design and architectural layout come together in this building.
Architecture and Collections
The Iglesia Catedral de San Juan Bautista de Albacete offers a glimpse of a long building history: it was built in the early 16th century over an older Mudéjar church dating from the late 13th century. A Gothic-Renaissance church, it has a Latin cross plan and three aisles of equal height. The earlier building phase and the later church thus form part of a shared history; the floor plan and arrangement of the aisles also offer specific features to look for in the architecture.
The Museo de Albacete is located in the city centre, in Abelardo Sánchez Park. Its collections include archaeological holdings from various sites in the province, as well as ethnographic and art history collections. Nine permanent archaeology galleries are arranged chronologically, from prehistoric times to the 19th century; there are also four fine arts galleries. The permanent exhibition therefore offers both a chronological overview of archaeology and a dedicated area for art. As exhibition layouts may change, check the latest information before your visit. The Museo de la Cuchillería offers a different collection focus, with historical cutlery and bladed objects in its permanent exhibition.
Opened in 1887, the Teatro Circo was designed for theatre and circus performances. It was the city’s first purpose-built venue for leisure and culture. The former Iglesia de la Asunción also combines architectural history with a present-day cultural role: it now serves as the Centro Cultural of the same name. The Iglesia de la Asunción features a Renaissance-Mudéjar coffered ceiling and a Renaissance cloister dating from the late 16th century. The cultural centre’s programme may change; check the latest information if an event is important to your plans.
Landscapes and Buildings of the Province
At the provincial level, Albacete brings together the characteristic plain of La Mancha and the mountainous Sierras de Alcaraz and del Segura. The heritage of Albacete province also includes several rock shelters that form part of the UNESCO World Heritage property Rock Art of the Mediterranean Basin on the Iberian Peninsula.
The Castillo de Almansa combines Islamic and Christian military architecture. At the Castillo de Chinchilla de Montearagón, a different feature stands out: its moat is cut directly into the rock and measures ten metres wide and six metres deep. The castle can only be viewed from the outside; check visiting conditions before you go. The two buildings thus offer different points of reference for exploring historic architecture: one combines two military building traditions, while the other is notable for the dimensions of its rock-cut moat.
Festivals, Routes and Wine
The Feria de Albacete is a ten-day festival in September that attracts thousands of people. As the annual programme may vary, it is worth checking the dates before your trip. The Festival Internacional de Circo is also held in Albacete. If you would like to include it in your plans, check the dates and programme for the relevant year.
The Tamborada de Hellín takes place mainly on Holy Wednesday and Good Friday, when thousands of drummers parade through the streets. Its dates follow the Easter calendar. In November 2018, UNESCO declared the Tamborada an intangible cultural heritage of humanity. Along with the Feria, it offers a different point of reference in the calendar: the Feria takes place in September, while the Tamborada follows the changing Easter dates.
The Ruta del Vino de Almansa has more than 30 members, which offer tastings and visits to help visitors explore their wines. The offer includes winery tours, wine tastings and other wine-related experiences; check specific offers in advance. For travel connected with the Ruta del Vino de Almansa, major road links via the A-31 and rail connections with various cities are relevant. Another route is the signposted Camino de Santiago de Levante, which runs from Almansa in Albacete province to Escalona in Toledo province. Check the waymarking before setting out.
