In the town centre of Yeste stands Castillo de Yeste; at the same time, a considerable part of the municipality lies within Parque Natural de los Calares del Mundo y de la Sima. This brings local history and karst landscapes together in a destination whose sights and activities offer a range of different highlights.

History and Architecture in the Town Centre

Castillo de Yeste dates from the 13th century and was built over an earlier Muslim structure. From the 13th to the 16th century, it served as the residence of the commanders of the Order of Santiago. Inside, the Tierra de Frontera Medieval Interpretation Centre presents the medieval history of the Sierra del Segura in seven rooms. The colonnaded Patio de Armas features Gothic-Renaissance design and is used throughout the year for cultural and leisure events, including exhibitions and historical events.

Museo Etnológico de Yeste is also located in the castle: housed in the former dungeons, it tells the story of traditional life in the region through objects donated by Yeste residents. The different highlights at Castillo de Yeste thus range from medieval history and architecture to everyday life.

Iglesia de la Asunción combines Late Gothic and Renaissance architecture. It also houses a sorrowful Virgin attributed to the sculptor Francisco Salzillo. Visits are possible only as part of a tour organised by Ayuntamiento de Yeste or with volunteers from Asociación Romeros de San Bartolomé. The Oficina de Turismo is in the town centre at the foot of the castle and provides first-hand information for visitors; check its seasonal opening hours separately.

Another historic building is Convento Franciscano de Yeste. Agreements for its construction began in 1619; construction was completed in 1629. The building has two stacked levels with round-arched arcades, twelve in total.

Karst Landscapes and Protected Areas

Parque Natural de los Calares del Mundo y de la Sima is a karst landscape with striking limestone formations. The CM-3206 approaches the municipality of Yeste and provides the southern entrance to the nature park. The Microrreserva Cerro de Rala lies in the peripheral protection zone: a limestone plateau with steep slopes and limestone cliffs.

Peñas Coloradas is a protected mountain area in Yeste, with views over the Tus Valley. Pine forests and reddish limestone shape the landscape. Access is via the A-9 from the hamlets of Torrepedro and Los Collados, followed by an uphill forest track. As some surrounding land is private, visitors should stick to public paths.

The Monte Ardal Visitor Reception Centre is about 700 metres from the town area. From there, the nature park can be reached by car in around 15 minutes. Check the centre’s updated opening calendar before your visit.

Routes and Activities in the Municipality

Camina por Yeste includes walking, cycling and horse-riding routes across the municipality. The trails lead to natural, ethnographic and historical sights, as well as to various hamlets. The route network therefore offers several ways to discover the different landscapes and local connections, without all the routes sharing the same destination.

For mountain bikers, the BTT route from Boche to the Puente de los Pajareles bridge has two possible starting points: the hamlet of Boche and the El Pinico area, both about one kilometre from Yeste. By contrast, the Ruta al nacimiento de Arroyo Bravo starts in the hamlet of La Parrilla, within the municipality of Yeste. Microrreserva Ardal y Tinjarra has marked hiking trails and mountain-bike routes that are frequently used throughout the year.

The Monte Ardal via ferrata includes a 55-metre zip line and offers views of the Tus Valley and the calares of the Sierra del Segura. From Yeste, access is via the CM-3206, followed by an approximately five-kilometre paved track to a signposted car park. Check local conditions before setting off.

At Embalse de la Fuensanta, there are trails for walking and cycling, and sport fishing is also possible. Visitors can also use canoes and paddleboards there, particularly during the summer months. Check the local conditions and availability of these seasonal activities.

Traditions Throughout the Year

Feria de Tradiciones takes place on the last weekend of October, unless it coincides with All Saints’ Day, and is recognised as an event of regional tourist interest. The programme includes a craft market, stalls selling traditional food and drinks, and an exhibition of native livestock belonging to local farmers. Visitors can also discover crafts such as embroidery, esparto work, basket weaving, breadmaking and metalworking. Check the dates for the year of your trip.

Guided access to the church, seasonal activity conditions and event dates are specific points you can take into account when planning your trip.
