A 121-kilometre river trail leads to Mahora, while the Iglesia de la Asunción combines Gothic, Neoclassical and Baroque-Rococo forms. These two themes offer different ways to discover the town: its cultural heritage in the historic centre and the trails along the Valdemembra.
Church, Façades and Townscape
The Iglesia de la Asunción is listed as an Asset of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural). The parish church of Santa María de la Asunción houses a 17th-century Hispano-Filipino ivory crucifix. The church was probably built during the 16th century under the patronage of the Marquis of Villena; his coat of arms can be seen on the vault keystones.
Historic buildings also shape Mahora’s appearance beyond the church. The town centre retains broad streets, whitewashed façades with stone doorways and traditional squares. The town also has former residences of noble families dating from the 16th to 18th centuries, with coats of arms on their façades. A town trail with several cultural sights offers a way to explore these aspects of the place. Mahora also has the Ruta de los Escudos. The Ruta del Valle del Cabriel highlights the water tower in the square as a sight to see.
Festivals, Music and Local Cuisine
The annual patron-saint festivities honour the Virgen de Gracia on 15 August and Saint Roch, San Roque, on 16 August. Those interested in local festival traditions can find other events throughout the year: during Holy Week, processions take place on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. The main day is Easter Sunday, with the Procession of the Meeting. During it, the Quintos present bouquets of flowers to the Virgin, known as Albicias. Another musical tradition is the Folías a la Virgen, a traditional song from Mahora sung on the Saturday after 30 April.
The festival of San Antón also combines religious and culinary traditions. It includes a pilgrimage to the countryside, an auction and a traditional pig slaughter. Dishes include Gachas and a rice dish made from the slaughter. Mahora’s winter cuisine also includes Atascaburras, Migas de Pastor, Ajoaceite and Tortilla de Harina. Local bars pair D.O. Manchuela wines with traditional tapas, cheese and produce from the market gardens.
Wine and Winery Experiences
Bodega Cantos offers guided tours of its facilities, wine tastings, tasting courses and gastronomic experiences. Check the arrangements before you arrive. The winery’s preserved inventory includes concrete amphorae and the original vertical press, which is no longer in use. A visit can therefore also offer a glimpse of historic cellar equipment, without implying that the former press is part of the winery’s current offering.
Trails Along the Valdemembra and Views Towards the Júcar
The Camino Natural del Río Valdemembra runs for 121 kilometres from its source in Chumillas, in the province of Cuenca, to its mouth in Mahora, in the province of Albacete.
