Casas De Juan Núñez can be explored through several layers of history: Iberian sculptures, an 18th-century stone parish church, cave dwellings and festivals all point to different facets of the town. These are complemented by local dishes and a predominantly flat landscape with elevations in the south. You can therefore shape your stay around cultural history, festival traditions or regional flavours, rather than focusing on just one attraction.

Iberian Finds and Architectural History

The Caballo enjaezado from La Losa is an Iberian sculpture dating from the 5th century BC and is kept at the Museo Provincial de Albacete. El Thoracato is a headless Iberian male torso made of limestone, found at La Losa. The Paraje de La Losa is associated with Iberian archaeological remains to which both works relate. The findspot and the place of preservation are distinct points of reference: El Thoracato was found at La Losa, while the Caballo enjaezado is kept at the museum in Albacete.

Another form of architectural heritage is the Iglesia Parroquial de San Pedro Apóstol. Built of stone in the 18th century, the parish church has sturdy buttresses and a small bell tower. Cave dwellings excavated into the rock have also been preserved in the San Pedro district. Two clearly distinct building methods can thus be seen side by side: the church’s stone construction and homes whose rooms were carved into the rock. For those interested in architecture, this contrast offers a tangible way to explore the town’s architectural history.

Cuco Sábanas is another notable historic structure: this circular building by the roadside is believed to have once served as accommodation for muleteers. Its traditional function sets it apart from the parish church and cave dwellings. Together, the three examples represent different forms of use and design: a religious stone building, homes carved into rock and a structure associated with muleteers in its former use.

Traditions Throughout the Year

Bonfires are lit in Casas De Juan Núñez on the night of 16–17 January in honour of San Antón. After Mass on 17 January, a blessed Rollo is distributed. If you are planning a trip for the occasion, it is best to check the event dates, as the programme may vary. The fixed January dates give the tradition a clear place in the annual calendar; for planning your trip, however, the date of the festival in that particular year is what matters.

Quintos is another community tradition. It brings together young people from the municipality who turn 18 or 19 that year to live together in a house, from the Friday before Holy Week until Easter Sunday. Participation may vary. Unlike the San Antón bonfires, this tradition takes place at another time of year and follows the period around Holy Week and Easter.

The Ermita de San Isidro lies two kilometres from the town centre and is associated with local pilgrimages and rural festivals. If you would like to visit for one of these celebrations, it is worth checking the dates in advance. The town’s cultural calendar thus includes both fixed-date traditions in January and events associated with pilgrimages and festivals.

Landscape and Local Flavours

The landscape can also be described briefly: the municipal area is mostly flat, with elevations in the south. This contrast adds a sense of the area’s physical character to its cultural history. For orientation, it is important to note that the description applies to the entire municipal area, not just the built-up town.

Gazpacho manchego is a local dish associated with Casas De Juan Núñez. The stew is made with rabbit or chicken, mushrooms, bay leaf and the special flatbread used for gazpacho. These ingredients make the dish a specific culinary point of interest when planning your trip. Together with the finds, the different architectural styles and festival traditions, it helps build a picture of the town that places cultural history alongside local everyday life.
