In Riópar, historic sites and industrial heritage meet impressive natural attractions. When planning your trip, you can focus on different aspects: Riópar Viejo tells the story of medieval history and traditional architecture, while the Reales Fábricas reflect the town’s industrial history. At the Nacimiento del Río Mundo, waterfalls, pools, and pine forests shape the landscape. First consider which of these aspects interests you most—that can also help you find the right base for your stay.

Riópar Viejo: Church, Castle Remains, and Constellations

The Iglesia parroquial del Espíritu Santo in Riópar Viejo dates back to the 15th century and is considered the oldest church in the Sierra del Segura. The remains of a medieval castle have also been preserved there; they are of Islamic origin. Narrow streets and restored stone houses in traditional architectural styles define the historic character of the village. The church, castle remains, and buildings offer different points of interest if you are interested in architectural history and the development of the village.

Another place to visit in Riópar Viejo is the Mirador Starlight. An information board and a planisphere calendar can help you identify constellations and other celestial objects. This installation adds a view of the sky to the historic themes, without requiring you to take part in a specific program.

Industrial History and Esparto Craftsmanship

The history of the Reales Fábricas de San Juan de Alcaraz dates back to 1773. They were the first factory of their kind in Spain and the second in the world. After more than 200 years in operation, the factories finally closed in 1996. Some of their facilities were subsequently converted into a museum of industrial archaeology. This allows you to see the long industrial history and the later transformation of the facilities as connected chapters.

The Museo del Esparto de Riópar features a varied exhibition of objects made from esparto and other materials, as well as equipment and tools once used in rural life. Workshops on esparto craftsmanship are also held there occasionally; dates are announced. The museum’s opening arrangements may change seasonally, so check them before your visit. When choosing between the museums, what matters most is your interest: industrial archaeology at one, materials, crafts, and everyday objects from the past at the other.

Waterfalls, Trails, and Nature Watching

The Nacimiento del Río Mundo, also known as Los Chorros, is less than ten kilometers from Riópar and is located in the Parque Natural de los Calares del Mundo y de la Sima. At its source, water plunges 86 meters from the Cueva de los Chorros. It then flows through clear pools and small cascades known as Las Calderetas. Access arrangements may vary seasonally; check them before your visit.

A signposted, four-kilometer trail leads from the Puerto del Arenal parking lot through extensive pine forests and past numerous springs and streams to Los Chorros. Trail and parking conditions may change, so it is a good idea to check locally. The trail offers its own way to experience the landscape on the route to the waterfall; the stated distance alone is no substitute for a personal assessment of current conditions.

For a different kind of nature watching, there is the Balsa del Gollizo: this small artificial reservoir has historical and heritage value and is suitable for observing birds and amphibians. Hiking, mountain biking, climbing, horseback riding, caving, and birdwatching are also available around Riópar. The Sendero de las Fábricas de Riópar is an easy trail, suitable for family outings or cycling trips. The range of options therefore extends from a specifically described route to activities you can choose according to your interests.

Practical Information for Your Trip

The Caz de las Fábricas is a long aqueduct, accessible via a route suitable for everyone and located less than one kilometer from the town center. Check trail conditions locally. The N-322 and CM-412 are available for traveling to Riópar. When searching for hotels in Riópar, you can start by choosing based on your preferred mix of local history, industrial heritage, and nature—without setting a fixed order for your visits.
