Higueruela offers a range of experiences for a stay: wetland and birdlife at Laguna del Salobralejo, a marked trail to Pico del Molatón, and archaeological and religious heritage.

Lagoon and Landscape

Laguna del Salobralejo is part of a lagoon complex protected as a nature reserve and designated as a Special Protection Area within the Natura 2000 network. Nearly 200 aquatic and terrestrial bird species use the lagoon as a breeding and resting ground; it is also suitable for birdwatching. To get there, take exit 112 on the A-31 towards Higueruela. Before the bridge, the road on the right runs parallel to the railway tracks. Check the route locally before setting out.

Pico del Molatón is 1,245 metres above sea level and is the highest point in the municipality of Higueruela and the northern half of Albacete province. The marked PR-AB67 circular trail starts in the town centre and leads to the summit. Check the signage and trail conditions locally. You can choose between two different nature experiences: birdwatching in the wetland or a circular trail with a summit destination.

The landscape also tells a story of land use and vegetation. Quejigar del Cantón is considered the largest Portuguese oak forest in the north of Albacete province. Cañada Real de los Serranos is part of Castilla-La Mancha’s network of livestock drovers’ roads, traditionally used for transhumance between winter and summer pastures.

Energy History and Trip Planning

Casa de los Molinos brings together several elements in one visit: an introduction to energy, a hands-on workshop, an exhibition of renewable energy models, an information video and a tour of an attached renewable energy facility. Visits are available in the morning, last approximately three to four hours and are intended for groups of around 40 people. Set aside a separate slot for this and confirm times and group visits in advance.

Centro de Visitantes del Parque Eólico de Higueruela offers another perspective on the subject. It is associated with the wind energy complex of five wind farms in the municipality. In 2000, Higueruela’s wind farm was described as the world’s largest facility within a single municipality. If you plan to visit the visitor centre, check the current access conditions in advance.

Archaeology and Architecture

Alquería Andalusí de La Graja is an 11th-century Andalusi archaeological settlement in Higueruela. The archaeological remains include buildings; finds also include pottery and metal objects. It offers a glimpse into an earlier chapter of the town’s history alongside the more recent themes of landscape and energy.

Iglesia de Higueruela is a neoclassical church dating from the late 18th century, attributed to Lorenzo Alonso Franco. It houses an image of Saint Anthony of Padua by Roque López and a Gothic-Renaissance image of Santa Quiteria “La Vieja”. Naturally formed Cueva Horadá is another destination visited by hikers and mountain bikers.

Wine and Local Traditions

Higueruela is connected to the Ruta del Vino de Almansa. The wine route showcases wines from the Denominación de Origen Almansa and the indigenous Garnacha Tintorera grape variety. Wine tourism experiences in Higueruela and Hoya Gonzalo include a guided tour of a winery’s facilities, with concrete tanks, a bottling plant and a barrel cellar. A projection explains the winemaking process, and the visit concludes with a wine tasting. Check booking details in advance.

A pilgrimage has been celebrated in Higueruela since 1964. It includes a procession through the town, followed by competitions, foot races and traditional games at the Casa Aparicio estate. The programme may vary from year to year; check the dates if you would like to plan your trip around it. The “El Charco” recreational area is also available to visitors and can be reserved. Before using it, check the reservation procedure and any exceptions.
