In Casas del Cerro, routes, architecture, and views can be explored as distinct highlights. The Camino de la Lana leads from the village down to the Júcar, while the Sendero El Corciolico climbs from the valley up to Casas del Cerro. There is also cultural heritage around the church square and a viewpoint overlooking the Júcar Gorge.
Routes in different directions
The Camino de la Lana enters Casas del Cerro along Calle de San Isidro and continues to Plaza de la Iglesia. It runs along Calle del Sol Saliente to the Mirador del Júcar; from Casas del Cerro, the route descends to the Júcar along a zigzag path. If you plan to walk a section, check current road and trail conditions before setting out.
The Sendero El Corciolico takes a different direction: it climbs from the valley up to Casas del Cerro, leads to the village water reservoir, and continues towards the church square. As a PR trail, it is marked with the usual white and yellow signs. Check the markings on site if you are using them to navigate.
The Camino de la Veracruz also passes through Casas del Cerro and has Caravaca de la Cruz as its destination. If you plan to take this pilgrimage route, check the current trail markings on site.
For choosing a route based on direction and destination, the difference is clear: the Camino de la Lana descends to the Júcar, the Sendero El Corciolico climbs up from the valley, and Caravaca de la Cruz is the destination of the Camino de la Veracruz.
Architecture and cultural heritage
The Ermita de Jesús Nazareno at Plaza de la Iglesia 1 is an 18th-century chapel. Its single-nave interior is divided into three sections by four columns attached to the walls. “Single-nave” refers to the main interior space; the columns further divide it into several sections.
The third section contains the door to the sacristy, as well as a main niche at the front with a figure of the Niño Jesús and two smaller side niches. These details describe both the layout of the interior and individual features of its furnishings, without reducing the chapel to its age alone. There is also an unusual sculpture in honour of a blacksmith in the church square. The chapel and the sculpture thus offer different cultural highlights: sacred architecture on the one hand, and a tribute to a blacksmith on the other.
Views and cycling
The Mirador de Alcalá del Júcar from Casas del Cerro offers a view of the meander in the Júcar Gorge. From there, you can see Alcalá del Júcar as a white village, along with its castle. If you want to compare the landscape with the cultural heritage, this offers a different perspective from the detailed layout of the Ermita: from the viewpoint, the gorge, the village, and the castle are in view.
Cycling can also be a focus of your trip planning: there are numerous cycling routes in Casas del Cerro. Alongside the pilgrimage and hiking routes described above, there are also routes for a cycling trip, without having to combine the activities into a single route.
