In Alcaraz, architectural history and a carpet-making tradition that is still maintained today come together with different ways to explore the surrounding area. The historic buildings and natural attractions each offer their own focus.
Plaza Mayor and Architectural History
Plaza Mayor was built at the beginning of the 16th century. Its layout forms an irregular rectangle, with arcades lining three sides of the square. The individual buildings also allow you to compare different styles and dates: Lonja del Corregidor dates from 1518 and has an arcade gallery with five arches on its lower level. Torre del Tardón has a hexagonal ground plan; its construction began in 1555 under Bartolomé Flores. The rectangular square and the shape of the tower thus represent different architectural features, just as their dates point to different construction phases.
Carpet Craft and Cultural Sites
Alcaraz’s identity also includes a long tradition of Spanish-knotted carpets, which continues to this day. In February 2023, the Junta de Comunidades de Castilla-La Mancha recognized this tradition as intangible cultural heritage of particular interest. Alongside its architectural history, Alcaraz therefore offers another cultural focus: a craft whose tradition reaches into the present and has also been officially recognized as intangible heritage.
Churches and guided tours are also cultural points of interest. Iglesia de San Miguel Arcángel now serves as a cultural center. Guided visits to the parish museum at Iglesia de la SantĂsima Trinidad can be arranged by prior appointment. You can also enquire about guided tours of the old town through the Oficina de Turismo de Alcaraz. If you plan to take one of these tours, it is best to contact the relevant office in advance.
Castle and Visit Planning
Castillo de Alcaraz survives today as an archaeological complex. Its preserved features include wall foundations and defensive entrances. Admission is free, and there are no fixed opening hours; nevertheless, check the current conditions on site before you travel. This allows you to consider a visit to the castle as a separate cultural activity, distinct from the guided tours that must be arranged in advance.
Nature Reserve and Cycling
You can reach the Microrreserva La Molata y Los Batanes from Alcaraz via the Alcaraz–Mesta road; the protected area is freely accessible on foot. Around the confluence of the Escorial and La Mesta rivers with the Alcaraz River, the landscape forms a system of landforms, ravines and steep rocky cliffs. Coincya rupestris, a plant endemic to the province of Albacete and threatened with extinction, also grows in the Microrreserva. The natural setting therefore combines a distinctive landscape with a specific plant species.
For a cycling trip, the VĂa Verde de la Sierra de Alcaraz is another option to consider. It follows the former Baeza–Utiel railway line, which was never used, and is suitable for cycling. The Microrreserva and the VĂa Verde thus offer different kinds of activity: free access on foot in the protected area and a former railway line suited to cycling. This distinction can help you choose the focus of your stay.
Local Cuisine and Event Dates
Ajo pringue is part of Alcaraz’s mountain cuisine. It is a culinary point of reference to consider alongside carpet craft when exploring local traditions; no specific tasting venue is associated with it. The Alcaraz events calendar also lists a medieval market on the weekend before or after May 1. If this date matters to your travel plans, check the exact event dates for your intended travel period.
Alcaraz offers two distinct sides to help you choose the focus of your trip: architecture, carpet craft and cultural sites on the one hand, and a protected area and cycling on the other. If you are looking for a hotel in Alcaraz, you can use these interests as a starting point and enquire in good time about visits that require prior arrangements.
