In Salobre, a striking river landscape meets a town centre with a medieval layout. The Río Salobre shapes the Estrecho del Hocino gorge, while narrow lanes in the village lead to the square. There are also paths through the landscape along the Río Ojuelo, viewpoints and local traditions. You can tailor your stay to nature, local history or both.

Río Salobre: Gorge and riverside paths

The protected Estrecho del Hocino micro-reserve encompasses a gorge formed by the Río Salobre. Its interior can only be reached on foot; the terrain is rugged and difficult to traverse. If you plan to explore this part of the landscape, take these conditions into account when deciding. In some sections, the river has rapids, calm pools and ponds. These waters are of landscape and ecological value. An area along the Río Salobre is designated as a river nature reserve.

The Paseo del Río de Salobre offers a different kind of route. It runs parallel to the river through the entire town and can be walked at water level. This gives you two distinct options to consider: the path along the river through the town and the difficult access into the gorge. Which one is right for you depends on whether you are looking for a route in the town or the distinctive landscape of the gorge.

Views and routes through the landscape

Walking and mountain-biking routes in Salobre lead into the landscape along the Río Ojuelo and through the local holm oak and juniper forests. These offer different ways to spend time outdoors: you can focus on the river landscape or the forests without treating them as one single route.

The Mirador de las Colmenicas y Cuevas offers views of Salobre and the fertile orchards and vegetable gardens irrigated by the Salobre and Ojuelo rivers. The Piedra del Águila is another natural viewpoint. It can be reached via the El Llano and Hoya del Águila paths. The two viewpoints offer different perspectives: from the mirador, the town and irrigated farmland are part of the view, while the Piedra del Águila is described as a destination reached by its own paths.

Lanes, heritage and local traditions

The old town preserves its medieval layout. Its narrow lanes lead to the village square and give the town centre a clear structure for a stroll. Other historical landmarks include the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Paz, believed to date from the 15th or 16th century. At the Almazara La Milagrosa, the restored olive-oil production facilities, including the historic machinery, have been preserved. These places tell different parts of the town’s history: its established layout, a religious building and its former olive-oil production.

The Luminarias are also part of local traditions. These include bonfires on 23 January in honour of Nuestra Señora de la Paz and on 1 February in honour of the Virgen de la Candelaria. Lighting bonfires is also part of the San Juan tradition in Salobre on 24 June. The patron saint celebrations in honour of the Sagrado Corazón de Jesús take place around the third weekend in August. If you would like to plan your stay around one of these dates, you can take them into account when making your arrangements.

Reolid and the wider route network

Reolid is a settlement dependent on Salobre and has its own points of interest. The Iglesia de Santo Domingo de Guzmán contains a Mudéjar wooden ceiling. From Reolid, you can also leave the Vía Verde de la Sierra de Alcaraz via the CM-412 towards El Salobre.

When choosing where to stay in Salobre, the different highlights are especially useful to consider: the river and gorge, paths through forest landscapes, viewpoints, historic lanes and local traditions. As you plan, consider which of these themes matters most to you and whether the conditions described for each route suit your plans.
