The karst landscape, mountain trails, and distinctive cuisine give Paterna Del Madera several specific highlights to consider when planning a trip. Nature attractions include a cave with a local legend, a peak almost 1,800 meters high, and waterfalls; in the town, narrow, steep streets shape the small historic center.

Karst, Peaks, and Waterfalls

Cueva de la Osera lies in a karst formation with numerous sinkholes. The cave is also associated with a local legend about a bear that abducted a young woman. Two different aspects come together here: the geological features of the landscape and a story from local folklore. Pico de la Almenara provides another striking feature. It is almost 1,800 meters high, and the summit offers impressive views.

Water also shapes the nature attractions described here. El Chorreaero is a waterfall surrounded by lush, varied vegetation that can freeze in some winters. Several natural waterfalls lie along the stretch from Batán del Puerto to the houses of Sierra del Agua. Native brown trout and native crayfish live in the clear waters; otters are occasionally seen. Other local wildlife includes wildcats, Iberian ibex, red deer, fallow deer, and roe deer. Pines are the most common tree and come in three varieties.

Another natural attraction is Pino del Toril, a particularly large tree on Cuerda de los Gallineros. It can be reached via the Cañada del Provencio trail. These nature attractions therefore have distinct features: Cueva de la Osera brings together karst and legend, while Pino del Toril is reached by a named trail, and Pico de la Almenara stands out above all for its elevation and summit views.

Hiking Trails with Different Highlights

The historic PR AB-21 hiking trail runs from Paterna Del Madera to Alcaraz. The round trip is 21.86 kilometers long and connects the two towns. The PR AB-26 hiking trail runs from Paterna Del Madera to Vegallera along the banks of the RĂo Madera. The details offer different kinds of guidance: the round-trip distance is given for PR AB-21, while the route along the riverbank is specified for PR AB-26. Check the route details before setting out so your plans suit the current conditions on each trail.

The road to Alcaraz also passes through a landscape with several named points along the way. It goes through Vianos and Puerto de las Crucetillas and crosses the Sierra del Agua valley. The source of the RĂo Mundo can be seen from Puerto de las Crucetillas. Check road conditions before driving.

Historic Center, Festivities, and Regional Cuisine

Paterna Del Madera’s small historic center is characterized by steep, narrow streets. This gives the town a distinct appeal alongside its hiking trails and natural attractions. If you would like to combine culture and scenery on your trip, you can take the town’s character into account alongside excursions to the cave, peak, or waterfalls, without trying to fit everything into a single activity.

The patron saint festivities take place every year from August 23 to 28. If you would like to plan your stay around these dates, check the local festivities program. A defining local ingredient is the bean known as judĂa moruna, also called mollar, which is used to make ajo de habichuelas. Traditional dishes also include migas ruleras, gazpachos, andrajos, and guisaos. These dishes add a culinary dimension to the nature and culture attractions; no specific restaurant offerings are implied.
