Laguna del Arquillo, trails through a diverse landscape and notable architectural heritage give Masegoso a clear focus for a stay. Masegoso lies in a continental climate zone at elevations above 1,000 metres. Its landscape combines holm oak stands, pastureland and river meadows, providing habitat for red deer, foxes and Iberian ibex. Depending on whether you prefer a stroll, a longer walk or cycle, or exploring architectural heritage, you can choose different ways to spend your time.

Laguna del Arquillo and the landscape

Laguna del Arquillo is protected as part of the Natura 2000 network and Castilla-La Mancha’s network of protected natural areas. It is also designated as LIC ES4210006 and as the Laguna del Arquillo Natural Monument. On walks, you can explore parts of the shore along the more accessible sections. There are also open caves in the lagoon area, some of them decorated with rock paintings.

One scenic point on the Ruta Masegoso is Cañada de los Endrinos: this named section is surrounded by mountains and has a clear spring that attracts animals from the surrounding area. Water levels may vary seasonally. The route therefore brings together scenic views and opportunities to observe nature, without requiring a full circuit of the lagoon shore.

On foot, by bike and along stages

The Ruta Masegoso is a circular route that goes through Masegoso, the Vega de Masegoso and the Caminos de los Molinos before returning to Masegoso. It is listed as 12 km long with 300 m of elevation gain. The route was designed specifically for bicycles; when trail conditions are good, it can also be completed on foot or in an off-road vehicle. As trail conditions can change, check them locally before setting out.

Masegoso has natural connections to the Vía Verde de Alcaraz for moderate walks and rides. You can follow the well-maintained Vía Verde from Masegoso to Laguna del Arquillo on foot or by bike. Here too, it is advisable to check trail conditions before setting out.

The Camino del Arquillo offers a different way to plan your route: this easy route is 40 km long and divided into three stages, including the Masegoso–Peñascosa stage. This gives you a circular route and a multi-stage trail as two distinct options. The right choice depends mainly on whether you want to plan a single loop or a route with several stages.

Churches, dry-stone structures and the starry sky

The hill at the entrance to Masegoso has a lookout point open to visitors and a Starlight spot. It is suitable for stargazing activities and is protected from light pollution.

The Church of San Benito in Masegoso was probably built in the 16th century. Its simple interior features a single-nave layout. A coffered ceiling with geometric, plant-inspired decoration and a distinct Mudéjar influence came to light during roof renovations. The small Church of San Antonio stands in Cilleruelo. It may have been built before the 11th century and can be classified as Romanesque; its single-nave layout and plain exterior define the building.

Dry-stone structures known as Cucos can be seen in many places across the municipality of Masegoso. They are being recognised for their historical interest; UNESCO World Heritage recognition is under consideration. The Cucos complement the churches as another form of architectural heritage.
