The landscape around Férez reveals itself in different ways: almond and olive groves shape the scenery along the Férez–Letur route, the Cenajo Reservoir brings together waterside scenery and local history, and Aleppo pines and holm oaks define Bosque El Calar. Other highlights include the architectural history of the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, the historic town centre and a cellar tour at Bodegas Lazo. You can tailor your stay around hiking, history, nature or local produce.
Hiking the Férez–Letur route
The Férez–Letur route starts at Plaza del Pilar in Férez and crosses the Arroyo de la Mora over a bridge. It passes through fields where almond and olive trees are the predominant crops. The route is 10.5 kilometres long, with an estimated walking time of 2 hours and 40 minutes. These details can help you estimate how long the hike will take. Allow extra time for breaks and check local trail conditions before setting out. The route description thus combines a specific starting point and a named crossing with a landscape shaped by agriculture.
Church and local history
The historic centre of Férez preserves the traditional architecture of the former settlement. The Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción originated as a former Arab mosque. It also houses a valuable Gothic choir screen and a historic 18th-century organ built by José Llopis. Its origins, Gothic design and organ offer different ways to explore the history of the church building.
The history of the Cenajo Reservoir is also part of the town’s past. When it was built in the 1960s, the hamlet of Alcantarilla de Jover, which belonged to Férez, was flooded. If you plan to visit the Roman bridge at Alcantarilla de Jover, note that it occasionally becomes visible when the reservoir’s water level falls. A large part of the Cenajo Reservoir lies within Férez. Fishing is possible there a few kilometres from the town; fish found there include trout, barbel and carp.
Forest, water and views
Bosque El Calar consists of Aleppo pines and holm oaks. It absorbs water that later re-emerges at springs such as Fuente del Cerezo and Noguericas. This offers a different perspective on the landscape from the fields along the Férez–Letur route: here, the focus is on woodland and water, while there it is on farmland shaped by almond and olive trees.
At Arco de la Mora, vegetation is watered with water diverted from its own mill. The site is of great landscape and ecological importance. From Mirador de Híjar, you can see a meander in the Río Segura shortly before the river reaches the Cenajo Reservoir. The forest, irrigated vegetation and river meander offer different perspectives on the landscape around Férez.
