Montealegre del Castillo combines local history, spanning from the Neolithic period to the present day at the Aula de Interpretación, with cultural landmarks and the Camino del Sureste. It also has a Renaissance church with Baroque details, a sanctuary on the edge of town and a local confectionery tradition.

Local History at the Aula de Interpretación

Display cases and explanatory panels at the Aula de Interpretación illustrate the history of Montealegre del Castillo. The period covered ranges from the Neolithic to the present day; guided tours are also available. A full visit to the Aula de Interpretación can optionally include a free route, a wine tasting and a meal. If you plan to take a guided tour or include these extras, check the current schedule in advance.

Church, Sanctuary and Castle

The Iglesia de Santiago Apóstol dominates the main square. A Renaissance church with Baroque details, it combines two distinct design elements; its location also makes it a prominent landmark in the townscape. Visitors interested in architecture will find it a good starting point for exploring the town centre.

The Santuario de la Virgen de la Consolación lies on the edge of town. It is a place of worship and part of the religious heritage. Together with the church in the main square, the sanctuary reflects two different aspects of the town’s religious heritage: the landmark building in the centre and the place of worship on the outskirts.

The Castillo de Montealegre del Castillo also offers a different perspective on the town’s history. From the hill, it commands a strategic view of the landscape, illustrating its defensive role. The castle is accessible by car.

Camino del Sureste and Overnight Stays

The Camino del Sureste includes a 31.720 km stage from Caudete to Montealegre del Castillo. The specific stage length gives pilgrims a distinct framework for planning, setting this journey apart from a stay focused mainly on the buildings and local history. When planning, you can decide first whether the Camino or sightseeing will be the main focus.

The sports centre has a municipal pilgrims’ hostel or reception point. If you are considering it when planning your stages, check its availability in advance.

Local Speciality and Festival Date

Libricos, also known as libros dulces, are among Montealegre del Castillo’s traditional sweets. They have been made there by hand for decades. More than 500 Iberian sculptures have also been found in the area around Cerro de los Santos. Alongside local history and buildings, the confectionery tradition and the area’s archaeological heritage offer other themes to consider when planning your trip.

The patron saint festivities in honour of the Virgen de la Consolación take place on 15 August.
