El Gollizo shows how closely the landscape of water and industrial history are connected: the Balsa del Gollizo is a historic artificial reservoir set in a natural environment; an aqueduct, path and hydraulic installations continue the story through to the use of water as a source of power. This gives you two specific interests to consider when planning your trip: observing nature by the water and learning about the history of the machines that used hydraulic energy. It is also worth checking the details of each route carefully, as they differ in classification and course.

The Balsa del Gollizo: Historic Reservoir and Natural Setting

The Balsa del Gollizo, also known as the Embalse del Molino, is a small artificial reservoir of historic and heritage value. Its natural surroundings are suitable for observing birds and amphibians. Sightings vary by season, so if wildlife watching is important to you, take this variation into account when planning. Here, local heritage and nature come together in one place. The reservoir is therefore of interest both to travellers interested in water engineering and to those who enjoy seasonal wildlife watching.

Water as a Source of Power

The Caz de las Fábricas is a long aqueduct that carried water from the Balsa del Gollizo. The Sendero de las Fábricas follows the water from mountain springs to its use as a source of power for mills or martinetes. The two names represent specific aspects of the water theme: an aqueduct and its role in transporting water, and a path whose course illustrates the use of spring water as a source of power. The hydraulic infrastructure associated with the Caz supplied energy to machinery used in Riópar’s metal industry. Water from the Arroyo del Gollizo was also used by the hydraulic installations of the Real Fábrica de Metales de Riópar to power machinery. Water is therefore not just a feature of the landscape, but also a source of labour in local industrial history.

Routes for Different Interests

Route RSR 1.3, “Riópar–La Toma del Agua,” runs from Riópar towards the hamlet of El Gollizo. It is rated easy and has no technical difficulties; however, trail conditions may change. At the Balsa del Gollizo, the route follows a path that branches off to the right and climbs up to the road. Follow the official signs on site, particularly when navigating this junction.

The mountain circular hike Riópar–Gallineros–Pino Gordo, opened on 27 August 2026, runs from Riópar through El Gollizo and climbs to the Sierra del Agua. When comparing the routes, consider whether an explicitly easy rating or a circular route with a mountain ascent matters more to you: the two descriptions offer different points of reference for your choice.
