Liétor offers several ways to enjoy a stay: churches and art, nature watching along the Río Mundo, views from Pilancón and activities with very different levels of intensity. If you’re interested in culture, the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Belén and the Iglesia de Santiago Apóstol are specific places to visit. Outdoors, options range from looking out over the water and watching wildlife to a hiking section rated as highly difficult.

Church art and architectural history

The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Belén de Liétor was built in 1570. Its exceptional collection of folk murals dates from the 18th century and is considered the finest in Spain in its style. The construction date and murals therefore point to different periods at the same place. To visit, contact the Oficina de Turismo de Liétor, which conducts the guided tours. Confirm the arrangements for your visit with the Oficina de Turismo before you arrive.

The Iglesia de Santiago Apóstol tells a different story: it was built in the 18th century over an earlier medieval church and retains a Gothic tower from the 16th century. If you pay attention to the sequence, you can distinguish three building phases here—the medieval predecessor, the 16th-century tower and the 18th-century church.

Inside Liétor’s parish church is a collection arranged across five rooms. Its subjects include sacred art, local archaeology and religious art; an ethnographic collection is on the upper level. These different sections offer several cultural perspectives rather than limiting the visit to a single art form.

A crypt lies beneath the main altar of a church in Liétor. It preserves 20 intact bodies of members of religious orders and benefactors of the convent, dressed in their original clothing. This unusual historical detail differs from the art collections and visible architectural history of the churches.

The Río Mundo and views from Pilancón

The Presa del Azud is a scenic area on the Río Mundo near Liétor, where you can observe the water. With a little luck, you may see herons and trout leaping upstream. The Pilancón footbridge, by contrast, offers a wide view of the deep Río Mundo canyon, small terraced gardens, neighboring woodland and striking rock formations nearby. The two places offer different highlights: at the Presa del Azud, the focus is on the water and possible wildlife sightings, while from Pilancón the canyon and surrounding landscape shape the view.

Activities for different levels

La Tirolina is also located on the Pilancón footbridge, fully integrated into the town of Liétor. The ride covers 300 meters out and 300 meters back; each flight lasts approximately 45 seconds. This time refers to each individual flight. The distance and approximate duration help put the activity in perspective, without equating it with a longer hike.

The Ayna–Liétor section of the GR-67 is 15.48 kilometers long, has an elevation gain of 427 meters and is rated as highly difficult. It also has historical and scenic value. If you’re considering this hike, take the distance, elevation gain and stated high level of difficulty into account when making your decision. This sets the route apart from Liétor’s other experiences: the focus here is on a challenging hike and its historical and scenic value.
