Murals throughout the town, museums covering a range of topics, and trails from the historic centre into the countryside offer several ways to explore Molinicos. The Murales de Molinicos are part of the artistic and tourism project “Molinicos – Museo a Cielo Abierto” and form a route through the entire town. This lets you combine art in the townscape with a museum visit or a route in the surrounding area.
Routes between the town centre and the countryside
The “Escenarios de pelĂcula en Molinicos, casco antiguo y museos” route connects the old town and museums with Charca de los Molinos, Puente Arco Medieval, the former town hall and the church. It takes about two hours and is suitable for all audiences. This provides a defined timeframe for visiting several of the town’s cultural sites.
The Ruta Atalayas also takes about two hours, but is described as a 6.5-kilometre circular route. It starts near the town centre and, on the way back, passes through the old town along Calle Molinos. Its destinations include watchtowers built between the 10th and 12th centuries. If you are choosing between the two routes, they differ both in their stops and in the clearly specified circular route of the Ruta Atalayas.
The Ruta El Bujero starts in the town centre and returns to Molinicos after passing through Cortijo de El Retamar. El Bujero is a natural rock fissure at an altitude of about 1,100 metres. From there, you can see parts of the municipal areas of Molinicos, Elche de la Sierra and Letur. These experiences of the landscape complement the historical and cultural themes of the town routes.
Townscape and nature
The municipality of Molinicos is part of the Parque Natural de los Calares del RĂo Mundo y de la Sima. Trails in the surrounding area pass through pine forests and by waterfalls, including the waterfall on the Arroyo Morote. La Charca is a small waterfall formed by the Arroyo Morote, with a pool near Puente de los Patos. A Roman aqueduct can also be seen at La Charca; it was later used as an irrigation channel.
The townscape also reflects its setting in a mountainous region: Molinicos lies between two streams, and white houses and uphill streets give it architecture typical of the mountain region. If you want to include nature and local history in your trip, you will find a range of subjects, from the waterways and trails in the surrounding area to the town’s buildings and art.
Museums and guided tours
The Museo y Ruta de los Oficios de Molinicos is an ethnographic route exploring traditional ways of life and occupations associated with the land, mountains and use of water. Groups, schools and secondary schools can visit on any day of the week by booking in advance. Arrange your booking before your visit.
The former town hall was built shortly after municipal emancipation in the mid-19th century. Today it houses the Museo MicolĂłgico “La Casa del NĂscalo”, dedicated to the world of fungi and mycology and considered the only museum on this subject in Castilla-La Mancha. The former town hall and the Casa del NĂscalo can be visited free of charge on a guided tour by prior reservation.
The machinery of a former grain mill has been preserved at Molino del Jaro, where visitors can learn how wheat is milled into flour. The Molinicos tourist office provides visitor services in the town and its surrounding area, as well as guided tours of the filming locations of “Amanece que no es poco” and the La Casa del NĂscalo and Museo y Ruta de los Oficios museums. Confirm the guided-tour options before your trip.
