The Kaisergebirge Nature Reserve lies east of Kufstein and has a direct geographical connection to the city. Here, nature experiences sit alongside fortress history, the old town and glassmaking. You can get to know Kufstein from different perspectives: on paths by the water and in the mountains, through historic sites or by discovering the work of glassblowers.
Hiking trails between water and mountains
The circular trail around Lake Hechtsee is a clearly defined hiking option: the easy route is 2.7 kilometres long and starts and ends at the Hechtsee car park. The trail runs right alongside the water and offers views of the Kaiser Mountains. Its distance and starting and finishing point are clearly specified, as is the distinctive change between the shoreline and mountain views.
Another route option is the Kufstein Nature Experience Trail. It passes 14 interactive stations on its way from the Duxer Alm middle station to the Marienkapelle chapel on Duxer Köpfl. The two endpoints give the themed trail a clear direction, while the stations define its interactive character.
For further hikes, the Kaisergebirge Nature Experience offers more than 1,000 kilometres of hiking trails. These include alpine paths, leisurely trails, challenging hikes and easy family walks. This is a different scale from the specific loop at Lake Hechtsee: there, an easy route is described with its distance and starting point; here, a network of trails offers a choice of different types of hikes. Free guided experience tours with knowledgeable guides are also available in the Kaisergebirge. The programme is seasonal; check the dates before your trip.
Fortress history and the old town
Kufstein Fortress was first mentioned in a document in 1205. In 1504, Emperor Maximilian I captured the fortress from the Bavarians. The two dates mark different points in its history: 1205 is the first documented mention, while 1504 marks a specific event in the history of the fortress.
The museum in the fortress’s state prison features a cell block with 13 cells on the fourth floor of the Emperor’s Tower. The state prison operated during the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy and housed mostly political prisoners. The cells and the prison’s history add another chapter to the fortress’s military past.
The Heroes’ Organ plays every day at 12:00 and has 4,948 pipes. The time may be relevant when planning your day; check when it plays before arranging your visit around it. The old town is also home to Römerhofgasse, which is listed as a place of interest.
Kufstein Fortress offers a castle banquet by advance reservation as a culinary and experiential offering. If you would like to include this in your itinerary, confirm the offer before booking.
Glassmaking in Kufstein
Another discovery takes you to the RIEDEL Glass Manufactory. On a guided tour of the production facility, you can experience handcrafted production and the precision of master glassblowers. Public tours take place Monday to Friday at 11:00 and 13:30; no advance booking is required. As tour times and visitor information are important for your visit, please check them in advance. Unlike a hike or a visit to the fortress, the focus here is on the production process and the skill of the glassblowers.
