In Mariastein, pilgrimage history, art and rural landscapes come together as different reasons to visit. A peaceful high plateau with plenty of green space, forests and a rural character defines the area; at the same time, Mariastein sits on a steep-sided, ten-metre-high rock in the Tyrolean Unterland. Things to do include visiting the pilgrimage church, hiking and—in winter—cross-country skiing.

Pilgrimage Church, Art and History

Mariastein Pilgrimage Church was built around 1360. The Tyrolean regalia are displayed there, including the Archduke’s hat and sceptre. The castle museum is also located inside the pilgrimage church. It showcases historical artefacts, religious artworks and exhibits documenting the development of the pilgrimage church and its surroundings. The displays range from individual works of art to the history of the church building and its setting.

The miraculous image is a Gothic carving in limewood, created around 1450. It was made by an unknown master from the Salzburg-Bavarian art circle. Mariastein Castle Chapel features a Gothic ribbed vault and a Late Gothic PietĂ . The artistic features differ: the miraculous image is notable for its material and approximate date of creation, while the chapel is distinguished by its vault design and PietĂ .

From the old castle gate, you can reach the Chapel of Grace via a 140-step spiral staircase. The Church of Our Lady of Mariastein is open continuously from 8:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. in summer and from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in winter. These seasonal hours are a helpful guide for planning your day; check the current opening hours before your visit.

The Knights’ Hall in Mariastein Castle Museum can only be visited on a guided tour and by prior arrangement. If you plan to visit this part of the museum, arrange your visit in advance.

Hiking and Cross-Country Skiing

The “Mariastein Circular Route via Moosbach” hike starts at the car park below the pilgrimage church. Free parking is available directly below the church. Follow the local signs when you arrive. This gives the hike a clearly defined starting point.

The Mariastein cross-country ski trail is an easy 2.3 km route. It serves as a connecting trail to the Schneerosental valley and can also be skied as a loop. The connection and the loop offer two different ways to choose your route: either continue on to the Schneerosental valley or follow the loop. Snow conditions and trail operations are seasonal; check the current status before setting out. There are therefore two practical seasonal considerations for your trip: the church has seasonal opening hours, while cross-country skiing depends on snow conditions and trail operations.
