Scheffau am Wilden Kaiser can be chosen according to the activities you have planned: Hintersteiner See and the Rehbachklamm loop trail offer different landscape highlights; SkiWelt and KaiserWelt provide further, clearly distinct experiences. There are also two historic religious buildings. When planning your trip, the key considerations are therefore the season, your destination and the focus you want for your days here.

Mountain Lake and Trails

Hintersteiner See is a mountain lake covering 56 hectares, with a depth of up to 36 metres. It lies at an elevation of 883 metres above Scheffau am Wilden Kaiser, in the Wilder Kaiser nature reserve. On the eastern shore, the lido has a lawn; check seasonal opening details before your visit.

The family circular hike Rehbachklamm and Seilabodenkreuz passes through the Rehbachklamm gorge, via the Kaiseralm and Jägerwirt, and back to the village centre. As a circular hike, it returns to the village; trail conditions can vary, so it is worth checking them before setting out. The Kaiserkrone Trail Ultra route also starts and finishes in the village centre of Scheffau.

To the Lake by Hiking Bus

The hiking bus is a seasonal option for getting to Hintersteiner See: it runs daily from May to October. The published timetable is valid until 1 November 2026. Check the specific departure times for your travel date.

SkiWelt and the Brandstadl Cable Car

In winter, the focus turns to SkiWelt Scheffau, a central access point to the SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser – Brixental ski area. From there, ski connections run towards Ellmau, via Brixen to KiWest, and to Söll. The Brandstadlbahn is an eight-person gondola that ascends in two stages to an elevation of 1,650 metres. Lift and piste operations are seasonal; check the operating period for your trip planning.

KaiserWelt for Families

KaiserWelt Scheffau, an adventure park for families, is located at the Brandstadlbahn mountain station. It offers interactive stations, an adventure trail and panoramic views. A treasure hunt leads through the KaiserWald to the old emperor’s seven gemstones; it begins after the ride on the Brandstadl gondola. This makes it easy to plan the ascent and the described KaiserWelt experiences as one outing.

Chapel and Parish Church

The Bärnstatt Chapel – St. Leonhard Chapel stands on the road to Hintersteiner See, opposite the Gasthof Bärnstatt. The original Chapel of Grace beside it was built as early as 1693. In the village centre, the parish church of Scheffau, dedicated to St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist, has had its present Baroque form since 1756. The wall paintings are by Matthias Kirchner of Kitzbühel. The dates relate to two distinct building histories: that of the original Chapel of Grace and that of the parish church in its present Baroque form.
