Alpbach combines a distinctive architectural history with cultural trails and mountain destinations. The Congress Centrum is built into a hillside; at its stops, the Alpbach Heritage Trail offers insights into the village’s history, the lives of its residents, and its flora and fauna. This gives you a choice of different focuses when planning your trip: local history, a guided cultural walk, or the alpine pasture and hiking area around Wiedersberger Horn.

Architecture and History

The Congress Centrum Alpbach is built into a hillside. The guidelines for new buildings offer another perspective on local architecture: in 1953, clear requirements were established in Alpbach to preserve the original Alpbach architectural style in the long term. They remain in force today. A distinctive building and the enduring design rules thus stand alongside one another, without one representing the other.

The Alpbach Mountain Farmers’ Museum is located at the Vorder-Unterberg farm in Inneralpbach. Local carpenters built the farm between 1636 and 1638; it was inhabited until 1952. The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, built between 1913 and 1920, is also in Inneralpbach. These dates offer different historical perspectives: an old farm, an early 20th-century church building, and the guidelines for new buildings that have been in force since 1953.

The European Forum Alpbach also has cultural ties to the village. Its scholarship program enables students, young professionals and committed changemakers to attend seminars, a high-level conference program, and social and cultural activities in Alpbach. As the program structure may change, check the dates and current program if you are planning a trip around it.

Cultural Trails with Different Themes

“KulTour – Traditional Crafts in Alpbach” is a guided cultural walk from the village center through Inneralpbach to the historic Weikart Mill and the Brechlstube. It explores nature, history and village culture. The Alpbach Heritage Trail has a different focus: its stops offer insights into the village’s history and the lives of its residents; other stops share information about the local flora and fauna.

The Marienweg leads from the Thaler car park to Hösl Chapel. The routes therefore differ in both subject and format: KulTour combines traditional crafts and village culture on a guided walk, the Heritage Trail shares local history and nature knowledge at its stops, and the Marienweg leads pilgrims to a chapel. When choosing between these trails, you can focus on the theme that interests you most during your trip.

Wiedersbergerhornbahn and the Mountain Area

The six-person Wiedersbergerhornbahn gondola takes you up to an altitude of 1,850 m, into the alpine pasture and hiking area around Wiedersberger Horn. The cable car also takes visitors to the ski slopes around Wiedersberger Horn in just a few minutes and provides the fastest access to the large Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau ski area. Operating hours vary by season; check them for your planned travel dates.

The Lauserland adventure forest playground is right next to the top station of the Wiedersbergerhornbahn. Its location is a useful point of reference when exploring destinations around the top station. At Wiedersberger Horn, you can access both the alpine pasture and hiking area and the ski slopes; which activity is right for you depends on the focus of your trip and the cable car’s seasonal operating schedule.

Planning Your Stay in Alpbach

If your visit is centered on the European Forum Alpbach, the relevant dates and program details are especially important; for mountain activities, you should also take the cable car’s seasonal operating hours into account.
