If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Oberau Wildschönau, you can plan your trip around several themes: mountain lift destinations, trails through the Kundl Gorge, farming history and traditional local production. Seasonal operating times are just as important as deciding whether to focus on nature or culture.
Mountain lift destinations for planning hikes
The Markbachjochbahn is an 8-person gondola lift that takes you to the Markbachjoch hiking area. The Schatzbergbahn runs directly from the village centre in Auffach to the Schatzberg, providing access to the hiking area there. The two lifts therefore lead to different hiking areas. Both operate seasonally; check the current times before setting out.
Trails through the Kundl Gorge
The approximately 3.5-kilometre hiking route through the Kundl Gorge starts in the Mühltal district and is also suitable for pushchairs. The tourist train runs between Mühltal and the entrance to the gorge from late May to early October. As seasonal operating dates may change, check the timetable before your visit. In winter, consider the walking and hiking trails at Schönangeralm, through the little village of Thierbach and to the wildlife enclosure in Foisching.
Summer and winter activities
The Schatzberg toboggan run starts at the middle station of the gondola lift of the same name and leads through the forest to Auffach. It operates seasonally; check the current operating times in advance. Drachental Family Park offers action-packed attractions in both summer and winter, including an 18-hole adventure mini-golf course. The Drachenflitzer Alpine Coaster in the park operates in all weather conditions and features bends with a height of up to 25 metres.
High valley, rock faces and geology
Wildschönau is a picturesque high valley in the Kitzbühel Alps, with mountains and forests and no through traffic. The Kragenjoch offers a distinctive geological feature: it is the only limestone mountain in Wildschönau, while the surrounding mountains consist of slate. In the Kundl Gorge, steep rock faces rising up to 200 metres frame the landscape.
Mountain farming life and Krautinger
The z'Bach Mountain Farming Museum illustrates the austere life of Tyrolean mountain farmers in the past through more than 1,200 exhibits. It is housed in an original farmhouse dating from 1795. The building and collection offer two ways to explore the same subject: the historic farmhouse and the depiction of farming life through the exhibits.
Krautinger is a turnip schnapps made from white stubble turnips and is distilled exclusively in Wildschönau. Fifteen farmers still uphold the Krautinger distilling tradition there under a historic distilling licence. The drink, its ingredient and the distilling tradition are thus connected; this regional speciality encompasses both the product and how it is made.
Cheese and herb tours
Cheese tours are offered at Schönangeralm in summer. As seasonal availability may vary, check the current dates before planning a specific visit. Guided tours of the herb garden introduce medicinal herbs, ointments and teas. The two activities have different focuses: cheese at the alpine pasture, and herbal knowledge, including uses and preparations.
