Wildschönau can be explored at different scales: a short, almost level walking path, longer routes with specific distance information, and museums dedicated to Tyrolean crafts and mountain farming life. This lets you plan your outings according to walking distance and interests. The Auenweg in Niederau, Kundler Gorge and the Wildschönauer Wirbelwindweg are particularly easy to compare.

Comparing Trail Distances

The Auenweg in Niederau is an almost level 1 km walking path that takes about 30 minutes. There is a medicinal plant educational trail along the way. Signs explain the herbs and plants that grow there, as well as their traditional uses. This combines a manageable distance with a specific nature theme.

Kundler Gorge offers a longer route: the hike begins in the Mühltal district and runs for around 3.5 km through a gorge framed by steep rock faces rising up to 200 metres. The route is suitable for pushchairs. The stated period for seasonal access runs from 1 April to 15 November; during this period, the gorge is freely accessible. Check the latest seasonal access information before your visit.

The Wildschönauer Wirbelwindweg runs for four kilometres between Niederau and Oberau and includes several activity stations. In terms of length, you can choose between the 1 km Auenweg, the approximately 3.5 km gorge route and the 4 km Wirbelwindweg, depending on your plans. The two shorter routes also come with additional guidance: an approximate walking time for the Auenweg and pushchair accessibility for the gorge.

Museums, Crafts and Art

The z'Bach Mountain Farming Museum displays more than 1,200 exhibits illustrating the frugal life of Tyrolean mountain farmers. A craft market is held there every Thursday from June to October. Demonstrations include wood carving, woodturning, felt slipper making, flax spinning, basket weaving and beekeeping. As the market programme is seasonal, check the dates before your trip.

More than 3,000 exhibits are displayed in 59 wooden rooms at the 1st Tyrolean Wood Museum. A 1 km wood-themed trail starts at the museum. The trail has a different focus from the exhibition rooms: here, wood is the theme of the route. The dome frescoes in the Antonius Chapel also offer a specific point of interest: they depict scenes from the life of Saint Anthony.

Mountain Destinations and Seasonal Activities

In Wildschönau, the Schatzbergbahn and Markbachjochbahn gondolas take visitors into the mountains. The 8-person gondola to Markbachjoch takes about eight minutes. From the mountain station, the mountain lake with its sculptures can be reached on foot in about 30 minutes. Operating times and ticket conditions for the gondolas vary by season; check both for your travel dates.

The Schatzberg circular hiking trail offers views of the neighbouring Alpbachtal. One section of the Bikeschaukel Tirol runs over Markbachjoch. The Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau ski area has beginner lifts in Oberau and at Roggenboden. The Drachental Family Park also has an 18-hole adventure golf course. These activities offer different highlights, from hiking views and a cycling stage to golf and ski lifts.

Local Flavours and Events

Krautinger is a turnip schnapps made from white stubble turnips and distilled exclusively in Wildschönau. The annual valley festival traditionally features a large procession on Sunday, with a different theme each year. Check the event dates and programme before your trip if you would like to plan around the festival.
