In the center of Auffach, two different points of interest meet: the 1st Tyrolean Timber Museum explores the subject of wood, while the Schatzbergbahn cable car takes you from here up to the Schatzberg. The Timber Trail and mountain trails add their own highlights, with a local history, different routes and views of the surrounding mountains.

Timber Museum and Timber Trail

The 1st Tyrolean Timber Museum is located in the center of Auffach. It covers more than 2,000 m², includes 39 interactive rooms and displays more than 3,000 wooden exhibits. The Timber Trail circular walk starts in Auffach behind the Timber Museum, to the left just past the wooden bridge. The museum and trail are therefore close to one another and offer two different ways to explore the subject of wood: the exhibits take center stage in the museum, while outside the circular trail leads from one stop to the next.

The Timber Trail has fourteen stops where visitors can learn about wood. It also recalls the region’s former timber rafting: logs were caught in the Ache stream and transported by water power through the Kundl Gorge into the Inn Valley. This connects the subject of wood with a specific local history of transport. If you’re interested in the circular trail, its starting point is behind the museum; the stops along the way explore the subject of wood.

Trails and views on the Schatzberg

The Schatzbergbahn cable car travels from the center of Auffach to the Schatzberg in just under 15 minutes, taking you directly to the Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau ski area. The mountain station is at an elevation of over 1,770 meters. From the Schatzberg Cross, you can enjoy views of the surrounding mountains of the Wildschönau and the Alpbachtal.

When choosing a trail, consider your destination and what suits you: the easy Schatzberg circular trail leads to the reservoir above the Gernalm. The Schatzberg Family Trail, which is suitable for strollers, runs from the mountain station via the mid-station to Auffach. The Koglmoos water playground is also in the Schatzberg mountain area. The Schatzberg is also a worthwhile destination for mountain bikers.

Chapels and insights into local topics

If you’d like to include chapels in your exploration of the village, you can visit two distinct sites: Schönanger Chapel was consecrated in September 2014 on a small rise at Schönanger in Auffach. Steiner Chapel lies at the foot of the Schatzberg, is dedicated to the Visitation of Mary and is a pilgrimage site.

During guided tours of the herb garden, Birgit introduces visitors to medicinal herbs, ointments and teas; tours may be seasonal. At the Schönangeralm show dairy, visitors can learn about cheese-making on guided tours and sample the finished product. Check tour booking options in advance. These activities can be explored as separate topics alongside the trails and timber history.

Seefeldalm is another special feature of the landscape: it is located in Auffach at 1,979 meters and is the highest alpine pasture in the Wildschönau.
