Kufstein Fortress was first mentioned in a document in 1205; the Kaiser Mountains nature reserve extends right up to the city. Fortress history and protected landscapes thus offer distinct points of interest for a stay. If you are looking for hotels in Kufstein, you can first consider whether cultural attractions or trails and a lift ride should be the focus of your trip.

Fortress, theatre and museums

The fortress is open daily, including public holidays. The Heroes’ Organ concert is included in the fortress admission price; admission conditions may change. Check them before your visit. There is also a round-trip ride on the panoramic cable car at the fortress. You should also check the current ticket inclusions before your trip.

Other cultural attractions have their own distinctive features: the theatre at Kultur Quartier Kufstein has 175 seats and accessible seating in the stalls. At the Madersperger Sewing Machine Museum, an audiovisual presentation tells the story of Josef Georg Madersperger’s life and work. The RIEDEL Museum is divided into three sections. The selection therefore ranges from theatre to a biographical presentation and a museum arranged in three sections.

When planning, this variety is primarily a matter of personal preference: would you like to plan your visit around the fortress, are you interested in seeing a play, or would you like to learn more about one of the museum presentations? These attractions offer different cultural points of interest without requiring you to follow a set itinerary.

Lift ride and trails in the landscape

The Kaiserlift runs from Kufstein to the Brentenjoch mountain station at 1,256 m; the ride takes 30 minutes. Lift operations may vary by season, so it is advisable to check the operating hours for your planned travel date. The family-friendly Kufstein Nature Experience Trail begins at the Kaiserlift’s middle station, by the Duxer Alm. Its location at the starting point sets it apart from the circular trails that begin elsewhere.

Two circular trails can be compared by their length and starting point. The easy circular trail around Lake Hechtsee is 2.7 km long and begins and ends at the Hechtsee car park. The also-easy circular trail from Kufstein to Thierberg Chapel is 6.6 km long and starts and ends at Unterer Stadtplatz in Kufstein.

Thierberg Chapel is a small pilgrimage chapel perched above the valley. The circular trail therefore combines a specific distance and a set starting and ending point with a culturally significant destination. If the distance is your main consideration, the Hechtsee route is the shorter of the two mentioned; if you would like to include Thierberg Chapel, choose the 6.6 km route.

To Lake Hechtsee by leisure bus

There is a seasonal bus service to Lake Hechtsee: during the swimming season, leisure bus route 50 connects Kufstein with Lake Hechtsee eight times a day on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays; it runs daily during the summer holidays. As operating days and the season are relevant, check the timetable for your travel date. The bus is a separate option to consider alongside the circular trail, which begins and ends at the Hechtsee car park.

When choosing a hotel in Kufstein, you can first decide which of these options will be the focus of your stay: the fortress and cultural attractions, a lift ride to Brentenjoch, or the trails at Lake Hechtsee and Thierberg Chapel. The different starting points, route lengths and seasonal conditions give you specific criteria for planning your stay around the activities that interest you most.
