Discover Rattenberg through its distinctive craft and architectural details: the parish church has two full-sized naves, glass is worked at Kisslinger, and from the tower of the Augustinermuseum, views stretch over the rooftops and across the Inn Valley. When planning your trip, you can choose between crafts, historic rooms, views and seasonal events. The experiences differ particularly in whether you would like to watch glass being made, visit collections or spend time outdoors.
Glass as a craft and visitor experience
Kisslinger's exhibition space, built into the mountain, displays collectibles and art glass from the region and the Venetian area. At Kisslinger, you can watch glassblowers, glass grinders, engravers and glass painters at work. From May to October, guests can also blow glass balls on Mondays and Fridays from 1:00 to 4:30 pm. If you would like to try it yourself, check the date for your visit in advance. At the second Kisslinger crystal glass branch, individual designs are engraved into glass.
Church and monastery museum
The parish church of St. Virgil has two full-sized naves: the BĂĽrgerschiff (citizens' nave) to the north and the Knappenschiff (miners' nave) to the south. Its Gothic core was built between 1473 and 1506; the church is considered one of the principal works of the Hagau building lodge. The Augustinermuseum showcases Tyrolean art treasures spanning nine centuries in an atmospheric monastery setting. The tower's viewing platform offers a view of Rattenberg's rooftops and the Inn Valley. The church tower of the monastery church is considered the only church tower in Tyrol.
Lanes, views and a stage
Rattenberg's medieval pedestrian zone is about 200 metres long. On a walk, you can also discover an art print by Egon Schiele pressed onto glass; its depiction can be compared directly with the city's rooftops. Schlossberg, with the ruins of Rattenberg Castle, is a viewpoint overlooking the town and the Inn Valley. The Bienerturm on Schlossberg near Rattenberg is also very well preserved. Every summer, the castle ruins serve as a stage for the Schlossbergspiele Rattenberg.
Craftsmanship and apple strudel
The Nagelschmiedhäuser were probably built in the 12th century. They house the Handwerkskunstmuseum, with children's beds, wood-panelled rooms and bedrooms furnished in their original style. The collection also includes antiques, information about shipping on the Inn and pictures. You can reserve a guided tour of the museum. This is a way to combine the houses' architecture with insights into historic living spaces and crafts.
Sweet treats are also among the local discoveries: Café Hacker has been making confectionery for 200 years. Café Konditorei Hacker offers a demonstration of how to prepare an authentic apple strudel, followed by a chance to taste it. The demonstration is available by advance booking and for groups of at least 15 people. Plan it as a pre-booked group activity and arrange your participation in advance.
When to visit, getting around and how to get there
During Rattenberger Advent 2026, candles in the windows, torches and open fires illuminate the façades of the medieval houses. Advent wine with elderflower flavour is served in the original Rattenberger Advent glass. On Advent Saturdays, the Advent Bummelzug runs from Brixlegg to Rattenberg and back. Check event dates and the timetable when planning a specific visit.
For a guided tour of Rattenberg, you can arrive by bus no. 604 or by train to Rattenberg/Kramsach station; check current connections before setting off. For another way to enjoy the outdoors, the walking path from Kramsach to Rattenberg is considered easy. Those interested in mountain biking can visit the Skillpark, a practice area in Rattenberg/Brixlegg, right beside the Inn Cycle Path.
