On the Guadiana, Badajoz’s distinctive character comes from its riverside setting and fortress history. A belt of surviving fortifications encircles the historic centre and serves as a public city park. The historic fortified area is therefore also part of the city’s open space. Badajoz lies on the banks of the Guadiana, about six kilometres from Portugal. Its riverside location and distance from Portugal give the city a clear geographical setting, while its buildings offer a distinct historical perspective.

Fortifications shape the city

Individual structures bring the history of the fortifications into sharper focus. The Torre de la Atalaya, popularly known as Torre de Espantaperros, was built by the Almohads in 1169. Its octagonal ground plan and height of 30 metres define its specific form. The Fuerte de San Cristóbal dates from 1641 and was the first bastion element built as part of Badajoz’s fortifications. The two dates point to construction periods far apart in time; the description of the Fuerte as the first bastion element also makes its role within the complex clear.

Another relationship between gateway and crossing can be seen in the Puerta de Palmas opposite the Puente de Palmas. The fortified gateway is flanked by two cylindrical towers with battlements. The bridge is almost 600 metres long, with fortifications and defensive structures at both ends. Together, they show two different forms of the same defensive history: a fortified gateway with its flanking towers and a long bridge fortified at both ends.

Stage, film and languages

The Teatro López de Ayala adds a cultural timeline to this architectural history. It opened in 1886 and was associated with the continuous presence of lyrical and dramatic companies from Spain. In 1897 it was also the city’s first cinema, and until the early 1930s, film screenings there were combined with musical and dramatic programmes. The theatre therefore represents more than a single type of programme in Badajoz’s cultural history: theatre, lyrical companies and the early years of cinema are all part of its story.

At the Museo de la Catedral de Badajoz, the exhibits are presented in Spanish, Portuguese and English. These three languages provide practical guidance for a visit to the museum.

Nature and food by the Guadiana

The view shifts again along the riverbank: the guided birdwatching tour “Badajoz, Ciudad de las Aves” follows the banks of the Guadiana through the urban ZEPA Azud del Guadiana. History and nature thus offer different ways to experience the city: on one hand, its surviving fortifications; on the other, a guided birdwatching tour in the riverside area.

Another culinary highlight is “Badajoz, Capital del Desayuno”. Held annually, the event supports gastronomic tourism and the promotion of local businesses, positioning Badajoz as a breakfast destination. Dates vary from one edition to another. If you are planning your trip around the event, check the dates for the relevant edition.

A second culinary perspective extends to the province: the Ruta del Vino y el Cava Ribera del Guadiana includes almost twenty municipalities in the province of Badajoz. Its offerings include winery visits, tastings and meals paired with wine. The two themes have different scopes: “Badajoz, Capital del Desayuno” positions Badajoz as a breakfast destination, while the wine route covers numerous municipalities across the province. This makes it possible to distinguish an annual culinary highlight from a wine theme at provincial level.
