The San Blas dance is part of a wider festival in Garbayuela: the celebrations include social and ritual customs, music, traditional dance and culinary traditions. The 16th-century Iglesia de San Pedro and a natural area along the Guadalemar add architecture and river nature to the picture. If you are travelling for a festival, the calendar makes a concrete difference; the natural area offers a different focus for your visit.

San Blas: Dance and Intangible Cultural Heritage

“La Danza y las Fiestas de San Blas” in Garbayuela (Badajoz) were declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in the field of intangible cultural heritage by Decree 59/2020 of 14 October. The celebrations bring together social and ritual customs and festive events with culinary traditions, community interaction, music and traditional dance. The San Blas dance features around 40 “danzaores” performing with two straight sticks made from dried acebuche wood.

The designation concerns intangible cultural heritage: the focus is therefore on customs and forms of expression, not solely on a building. The dance can thus be understood as part of a communal festival that brings together several cultural elements. If this occasion is central to your trip, check the current programme in advance.

Festivals and Dates Throughout the Year

The Enramá takes place during Easter night. Suitors place branches on women’s windows to win their affection. The custom is therefore tied to the Easter date.

The procession for La Candelaria passes through Garbayuela on 2 February, accompanied by young “danzaores”. The patron saint festivities in honour of San Pedro, Garbayuela’s patron saint, take place from 29 June to 1 July. The events therefore differ both in form and timing for travel planning: the Enramá takes place on Easter night, La Candelaria on a fixed date in February, and San Pedro over a period spanning the change from June to July. Before travelling, check the current programme for the date that interests you.

Iglesia de San Pedro and the Townscape

The Iglesia de San Pedro is a 16th-century building, designated a Site of Interest, and dominates Garbayuela’s square. Here, a historic building takes centre stage, while the San Blas celebrations, as intangible cultural heritage, show another side of local culture. Those interested in both will find different cultural themes to explore during a stay in Garbayuela.

Traditional Sweets

Garbayuela’s traditional sweets include Canutos de San Blas, Flores, Candelilla and Mantecados de cajón. Availability may vary by season.

River Nature and Protected Areas

A natural area along the Guadalemar River is located in Garbayuela and is suitable for camping and swimming in certain stretches of the river. Check local bathing conditions if you plan to swim there.

Protected natural areas around Garbayuela include the La Siberia Biosphere Reserve and Sierra de Villares–Balbueno. This gives you a choice of different focuses when planning your trip: recurring festival customs, a 16th-century building, or nature along the Guadalemar and in the surrounding area.
