There are three distinct ways to experience Aljucén: the parish church, Iglesia de San Andrés Apóstol, on the edge of town; the Parque Natural de Cornalvo, which encompasses the municipality; and the Camino de Santiago Vía de la Plata, a route associated with Aljucén. They range from a single building to a larger natural area and route. This can help you decide whether culture, nature or the route connection should be the focus of your stay.

The church and local history

The church dates from the 16th century and was built of masonry and dressed stone. The single-nave layout defines the interior, while the tower façade and Renaissance portal shape the exterior. The portal features stone relief medallions depicting Santiago and San Andrés; San Andrés is shown with an X-shaped martyr’s cross. The building’s design and portal reliefs combine architectural details with specific religious imagery. Visitors interested in historic churches will find several aspects of sacred architecture in this one building.

Natural surroundings and route connections

The Parque Natural de Cornalvo encompasses the municipality of Aljucén, and more than 250 vertebrate species have been recorded in the park. The Aljucén River has well-preserved riparian vegetation. Nature enthusiasts can therefore explore two distinct topics: the protected area’s vertebrate wildlife and the vegetation along the riverbank. You can weigh these separately when planning your trip, rather than treating the park and river as the same nature-related topic.

Aljucén is also connected with the Camino de Santiago Vía de la Plata. In Extremadura, the route is divided into five stages for cyclists and eleven for walkers. These figures refer to the region and distinguish between two ways of planning the stages; they provide a regional framework if you are considering a cycling or walking trip along the Camino. Aljucén’s train and bus station is on Ctra EX-209, exit 341, towards Mérida Norte. Check current train services before travelling.

Festivals throughout the year

The San Andrés festivities take place around November 30, on the last weekend of November; the Fiesta del Emigrante falls on the weekend after August 15. Both traditions offer dates to plan around if you would like to time your stay to coincide with a festival. As the annual program may vary, check the specific event dates for your travel dates.

Where to stay in Aljucén

Termas Aqua Libera is a country hotel in Aljucén featuring a recreation of a Roman house; accommodation details may change. It offers a spa and relaxing massages; wellness services may change. Unlike the 16th-century parish church, Iglesia de San Andrés Apóstol, the Roman house at the country hotel is a recreation.
