Discover Villar Del Rey through its natural and cultural heritage. A signposted circular trail leads through cork oak dehesa and a granite landscape; the Pozo de la Nieve offers a different highlight with its distinctive architecture. Depending on your interests, you can make hiking, birdwatching or historic buildings the focus of your travel plans.
Hiking Trails, Water and Habitats
PR-BA 129 “Los Molinos” is designated in Villar Del Rey as a signposted nature trail of the Pequeño Recorrido (PR) type and is a 10.3-kilometre circular route. It passes through a landscape shaped by cork oak dehesa, granite boulders and diverse herbaceous vegetation; in spring, the vegetation is especially lush. The route’s length helps you gauge the scope of the circuit. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
La Pesquera, a wetland where many bird species can be observed, lies along PR-BA 129. These include grey herons, black-crowned night herons, little egrets, mallards, moorhens, corncrakes, coots, kingfishers and red bishops. The species you can actually observe vary by season. This gives the circular route a named birdwatching spot as well as its landscape appeal.
The Embalse de Villar del Rey reservoir is fed by the Zapatón River. Its surroundings are home to a diverse range of wildlife, including threatened species; possible sightings vary by season. The reservoir’s fishing waters contain carp, largemouth bass, barbels and bogas. If you plan to fish, check the regulations and access arrangements separately.
Along the ZapatĂłn, Mediterranean woodland, riverside meadows and riparian forests of ash, tamarisk, oleander, willow, poplar and black poplar shape a landscape of high ecological value. Sierra de la Jabaliega is the highest point in the municipality of Villar Del Rey. At the reservoir, wildlife and fish species take centre stage, while along the ZapatĂłn, the focus is on riverside vegetation. The two bodies of water are therefore described in terms of different natural features.
Architectural History and Traditions
The Pozo de la Nieve dates from the early 17th century. It was protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the “Historic Site” category on 2 August 1994. This date refers to its protection, not its construction. Its floor plan is square on the outside and round on the inside. The contrast between these shapes gives it distinctive architecture.
The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario is a late Gothic parish church dating from the 16th century. The RomerĂa de la Virgen de la Rivera is associated with Easter Sunday (Domingo de ResurrecciĂłn). Villar Del Rey thus brings together architectural history and a tradition linked to a religious holiday.
When to Visit and Find a Hotel
During the Luminarias, bonfires are lit on the evening of the first Saturday in October, after the bells of the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario ring. If you want to include this event in your trip, plan your stay for that date and check hotel availability in Villar Del Rey for your chosen dates.
