Torremejía can be understood from a cultural and historical perspective through two buildings and the Camino de Santiago Vía de la Plata. The Casa-Palacio de los Lastra combines protected monument status with reused Roman funerary altars; the parish church is defined by its dating, building materials, and a possible dual function. There are also two local festival dates. When planning your trip, you can choose between architectural history, a visit during a festival, and the cultural Camino de Santiago as distinct reasons for travelling.

The Casa-Palacio and Roman funerary altars

The Casa-Palacio de los Lastra was designated a Bien de Interés Cultural in the “Monument” category in 1995. Its structure consists of a tower and adjoining domestic rooms. Reused ancient Roman funerary altars are built into the wall above the entrance portal. In the building, they thus serve a different purpose from their original one: the funerary altars are also integrated into the portal as building elements. The Casa-Palacio therefore combines its protected monument status with a tangible connection to Roman funerary culture.

The parish church and its possible dual function

Torremejía’s parish church dates from the late 16th or early 17th century and is built of rubble masonry and brick. It may have served both as a palace chapel and as a parish church. This possible dual function adds a question about its former use to the architectural picture, but remains a possibility. The two buildings have distinct features: the Casa-Palacio is characterised by its tower, adjoining rooms, and reused Roman funerary altars, while the church is notable for its date, materials, and possible dual function.

Festivals as a reason to visit

Santa María is celebrated in Torremejía from 18 to 22 August; La Inmaculada Concepción on 8 December. The dates fall in different seasons and offer two different reasons to plan a trip. If one of the festivals is the deciding factor, schedule your stay around the relevant date and check the date for your intended year of travel before booking. That way, you can choose the festival period first and then decide which other cultural themes to include in your trip.

Camino de Santiago Vía de la Plata

The Camino de Santiago Vía de la Plata is a cultural pilgrimage route that passes through Torremejía. In Extremadura, the route is divided into five stages for cyclists and eleven stages for walkers. The regional number of stages therefore differs considerably depending on the mode of travel. If the Camino de Santiago is the reason for your trip, you can plan your stages around the appropriate cycling or walking route and consider Torremejía as part of this cultural trail.
