Segura De León brings together a castle, a Mudéjar cloister, a church with a dated inscription and a landscape shaped by Mediterranean woodland. It is also home to Las Capeas, a festival whose dates may be a deciding factor when planning a trip in September. You can shape your stay around your own interests: architectural history and art, the festival or the dehesa with its distinctive landscape features.

Castle, Mudéjar Cloister and Church

Castillo Santiaguista was rebuilt in the 14th century by the Order of Santiago. Its irregular layout follows the contours of the terrain. This makes it possible to understand the building both through its history and its adaptation to the site. The castle is currently open to tourist visits; as access arrangements may change, check them before your visit.

The Convento de San Benito offers a different architectural point of reference: its double Mudéjar cloister has segmental arches. If architecture is your focus, it offers a clear comparison with the castle: there, the emphasis is on the irregular layout adapted to the terrain; here, on the form of the cloister and its arches. These two historic buildings thus showcase different architectural details.

Another trace of history can be found at the Iglesia Parroquial Ntra. Sra. de la Asunción. An inscription dated 1299 on the north door dedicates the church to Santa María. It was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in the “Monument” category; this declaration was published in 2009. The inscription and the monument designation relate to different historical reference points: the year 1299 refers to the inscription, while 2009 refers to the publication of the declaration.

Art and landscape also come together in the permanent exhibition at the Museo y Centro de Estudios de la Capea Eduardo Casquete. It features an extensive landscape collection donated by the painter Antonio Casquete de Prado, who was from Segura de León. Here, landscape is encountered not only as a setting but also as the subject of a collection. Those interested in cultural history and landscape will find a different perspective here than through the architecture of the castle, church and convent.

Las Capeas: Choose Your Travel Dates Around the Festival

Las Capeas is a festival of tourist interest in Extremadura, held in honour of Cristo de la Reja. It runs from 13 to 18 September; the dates may shift by a few days to include a weekend. The September Capeas, held over several days, feature around twenty young bulls each day, supplied by local livestock breeders. In the “corralá”, young men ride the animals or take part in bullfighting with them. The approximate number, daily schedule and setting give the festival a concrete framework. While the castle, church and landscape are enduring attractions, Las Capeas takes place in September and is tied to the festival dates each year.

Dehesa and Landscape Around Los Molinillos

The dehesa includes naturally occurring Mediterranean woodland with holm oaks, cork oaks and pines. These tree species define the landscape around Segura De León and offer a different focus from the town’s historic buildings. The remains of the so-called “de Dominguito” mill can also be found at Los Molinillos. There is also a large quartz and slate rock formation, from which you can enjoy a picturesque panorama and experience nature. The landscape theme thus ranges from the named tree species to the rock formation and mill remains.

Plan Your Stay Around the Reason for Your Trip

When looking for a hotel in Segura De León, one question can help with planning: Is Las Capeas the reason for your trip, or are the architectural and landscape attractions your priority? If the festival is the deciding factor, check the specific September dates before setting your travel dates. Otherwise, you can plan your stay around your interest in culture or the dehesa without being tied to a festival period.
