Waterways, historic buildings and a varied calendar of events reveal different sides of Ribera Del Fresno. You can get to know the town through its religious and archaeological heritage, explore the landscape and birdlife along its routes, or plan your stay around a festival. Seasonal differences are particularly clear: the Muestra Popular de Vinos de Pitarra y Matanza Tradicional takes place in February, while several food and craft events are held in August.

Water, landscapes and birdlife

La Pesquera is a waterfall on the Valdemedel River. Historically, the waters of the Arroyo Valdemedel made it possible to develop gardens, supply springs and wells, and power grain mills such as La Pesquera and the Molino del Niño. At Los Pilones, also known as La Pontezuela, the remains of an old mill and weir can still be seen. The weir was used to power waterwheels that irrigated the neighbouring gardens.

The Ruta ZEPA leads from Ribera Del Fresno to the archaeological site of Cerro Hornachuelos. The walking route is 7.71 kilometres long and takes an estimated 2 hours and 30 minutes. For nature watching, it passes through open agro-pastoral habitats, including hunting and feeding grounds of the lesser kestrel. Other possible sightings include vultures, owls, grey herons, foxes, genets, hares and partridges. The Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestra Señora de la Gracia is also part of the urban ZEPA protected area for lesser kestrels.

Another way to explore the surrounding area is the Ruta al Cerro de Hornachuelos. It includes a recreation area and a signposted visit to a pre-Roman settlement; along the way, views open up over around five or six villages and the Embalse de Los Molinos. The number of villages visible is an estimate, not a definitive list of places.

Architectural history and local heritage

A parish church in Ribera del Fresno dates back to the 13th century. Among its notable works of art is a Baroque altarpiece from the late 17th century, created by Alonso Rodríguez Lucas. The Convent of the Poor Clares, Jesús y María, was founded in 1535 by Juan Núñez Ortiz. The Ermita del Cristo Viejo was built in the 16th century over an older chapel and was the original parish church of Ribera Del Fresno. Its ruins preserve the dome of the chancel and a tower topped by a distinctive onion-shaped dome.

The Ermita del Cristo de la Misericordia is also part of the town’s architectural history: the chapel dates from the 18th century and has a notable architectural design. The historic furnishings of the Ermita de la Aurora include a Baroque main altarpiece, the choir stalls of the Thirteen of the Order of Santiago, and reused stones from former Visigothic columns. On the ground floor, the Chapel of San Juan Macías combines a chapel with stained-glass windows depicting scenes from the saint’s life; upstairs, a museum explores his life and canonisation process.

The Casa de Vargas-Zúñiga is a 17th-century palace in the Portuguese Manueline style. At C/ San Juan Macías 2, a building now houses the Casa de la Cultura, the Public Library, the “Cerro de Hornachuelos” Interpretation Centre, the municipal music school and the Ethnographic Centre on olive mills. The Casa Natal de Meléndez-Valdés at Calle Meléndez Valdés 19 is the birthplace of the poet Juan Meléndez Valdés.

A large bronze monument to Juan Meléndez Valdés stands in the public park. It was created by sculptor Luis Martínez Giraldo in 1985. On the edge of town, the Pilar del Caño is a pillar of ethnographic significance. The shrine on the “Valle Garzon” estate was built in 1967 at the site where, according to tradition, San Juan Macías performed his first miracle. The Oppidum Hornachuelos was inhabited at the end of the Copper Age, or Chalcolithic period, between 2000 and 1800 BC. The fortified settlement was laid out with one or two rings of walls and semicircular bastions.

Routes for different interests

For a bike ride, the Ruta de la Médica is an 8.6-kilometre option starting in Ribera Del Fresno. It follows prepared paths without any major climbs. The Ruta del Matachel is different: this 8.7-kilometre route, dedicated to the Río Matachel, has elevation changes and is physically demanding. The routes’ length and terrain therefore offer two clear points of comparison when choosing a ride.

The Ruta de la Cañada Real starts at the Ermita de San Isidro, passes over Cerro Hornachuelos to the Cañada Real Leonesa and is 19.6 kilometres long. Its highest point is 468 metres above sea level. Another route description leads from Plaza de España along a paved track to a monument to San Juan Macías, about four kilometres away. The return route follows the Vereda de la Tía Juana, where you can visit an old stone shepherd’s shelter.

Festivals, crafts and regional cuisine

The Muestra Popular de Vinos de Pitarra y Matanza Tradicional takes place in February. It introduces visitors to the traditional production of homemade Pitarra wines and includes a tasting. The Jornadas GastronĂłmicas are held in August and offer tastings of traditional dishes prepared on site. The two events therefore differ both in the month they take place and in their culinary focus.

The Jornadas Artesanales are also held every year in August. They showcase traditional crafts such as pottery, ceramics, leatherwork, embroidery and bobbin lace. The FEAVIR takes place in the second week of November and presents various types of domestic animals commonly found in the local area. The annual theatre festival brings together actors, theatre groups and productions from Extremadura; it takes place in summer on the grounds of the former open-air cinema. Another annual tradition is the RomerĂa at Pocito de San Juan.

The town’s connection with wine extends beyond the events: Ribera Del Fresno is one of almost 20 municipalities in the province of Badajoz included in the “Ribera del Guadiana” Wine Route.
