Montemolín combines sacred architecture with rolling dehesa landscapes and cuisine featuring traditional dishes ranging from Guarrito to Gañotes. If you’re looking for a hotel in Montemolín, you can plan your stay around a range of interests: church architecture, pilgrimage history, buggy or 4×4 tours, and regional specialities.

Church Architecture and Furnishings

The Parroquia de la Purísima Concepción is a single-nave church in the Gothic-Renaissance style. Its elongated rectangular floor plan and walls of exposed masonry and stone define its design. The church has 14 altars with their corresponding altarpieces. Most date from the 17th and 18th centuries and are Baroque, Solomonic or mirror-style in design. In contrast to this single-nave church, the Ermita de San Blas is an architectural landmark: it is considered the only surviving example in the areas associated with the Order of Santiago of a place of worship with two naves and a chancel set at an angle to the building’s main axis. The difference is apparent in the floor plan.

Pilgrimage History and Other Buildings

A hostel, or hospital, once stood on the site of the Parroquia de la Purísima Concepción, providing accommodation for pilgrims travelling the Camino de Santiago from the south. The present-day Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Granada was Montemolín’s parish church in the late Middle Ages and was dedicated to Santiago. The Romería de San Benito is associated with a restored hermitage dedicated to Saint Benedict. It stands on a beautiful plain a few kilometres from Montemolín’s town centre. Stone blocks from a vanished structure were reused in the Puente Medieval de Gallicanta.

Dehesa, River and Activities

Montemolín has a rolling landscape of dehesa and low scrub. The Río Viar crosses the municipal area, cutting deeply into the ancient bedrock. Montemolín is about seven kilometres from the A-66, the Autovía de la Ruta de la Plata, and the N-630 national road. Check road conditions before travelling.

Xtremabuggy is based in Montemolín and offers off-road routes by buggy or 4×4; booking in advance is advisable. The Jamón y buggies experience combines a buggy ride through the dehesa with information about nature and the rearing of Iberian pigs, followed by a tasting of the products. The experience is offered from October to May; check availability before travelling.

Cuisine and Religious Festivals

Traditional Montemolín cuisine includes Guarrito, Gazpacho, Caldereta and Migas, as well as sweets such as Gañotes and Perrunillas. The availability of individual dishes varies by establishment and season.

The Festividad de la Virgen de la Granada includes a solemn Mass and a procession in honour of Montemolín’s patron saint at the hermitage of the same name. Check the dates in advance; exact programme details may change.
