Cordobilla de Lácara offers several different reasons to visit: the parish church of San Pedro Apóstol, the pilgrimage to Los Santitos and a circular walk through the surrounding countryside. There are also two small reservoirs on the Lácara watercourse near the town. To start planning, choose a main focus: would you like to explore the town’s culture and architectural history, attend a festival, or make time for hiking? This will help you tailor your travel dates and activities to your interests.
Reservoirs and birdlife
Two small reservoirs lie on the Lácara watercourse near Cordobilla de Lácara: Embalse de Horno Tejero and Embalse de Boquerón. Birdlife is also a feature of Horno Tejero. The area is considered a regular habitat for griffon vultures, cinereous vultures, Spanish imperial eagles, peregrine falcons and eagle owls. This makes the landscape a distinct focus alongside the cultural sites: the waters help orient you geographically, while the species mentioned give Horno Tejero a specific connection to nature.
Church, pilgrimage and local heritage
The parish church of San Pedro Apóstol dates back to the 15th century. It is a small single-nave church with a square, vaulted chancel. Its artworks include an archaic-looking sculpture of John the Baptist, dated to the 16th century. The church’s movable cultural assets were also designated as being of historical and artistic interest on March 26, 2015. The building’s design, the sculpture and this designation offer several points of historical interest, without tying the church to just one period.
Another part of the local heritage is the pilgrimage chapel, dedicated to Saints Justus and Pastor and locally known as “Los Santitos.” It is set in unspoiled countryside. The Romería de Los Santitos takes place on the first Sunday in May on the private estate of El Cuadrado-El Santo. Prior permission from the owners is required to access the estate. During the Romería, pilgrims attend Mass in the chapel; families traditionally gather beneath holm oaks in groups known as “ranchos.”
The May Romería and the patron saint festivities are separate reasons to visit: the patron saint festivities are associated with August 6 and 7. Check the program for your intended travel year before setting your dates. Another traditional landmark is the Pozo del camino del Chorrero, one of the places that make Cordobilla de Lácara distinctive.
A hike among castle ruins, woodland and water
A circular hike near Cordobilla de Lácara described in May 2026 leads to the ruins of Castillo de Castellanos, through a cork oak forest, past the pilgrimage chapel and along part of the Embalse de Horno Tejero. The route brings together a castle, woodland, chapel and reservoir as distinct points of interest. Terrain and access may vary, and some sections may be off-trail. Check conditions before setting out and allow for sufficient flexibility in your plans.
Castillo de Castellanos, also known as Castillo Mohedano or Castillo de Moheda, lies five kilometres north of Cordobilla de Lácara and is privately owned. If you plan to visit, check access arrangements in advance. Its location makes it possible to include the castle as a separate stop in your plans; it does not mean the castle is within the town.
Olive oil and travel planning
A specific olive oil is also associated with the El Lácara cooperative: it produces cold-extracted organic extra virgin olive oil made exclusively from the Verdial de Badajoz variety. Products and visitor arrangements may change. If you want to buy the oil or visit the cooperative, check the current options in advance.
When planning your hotel stay, you can first choose your travel dates based on your reason for visiting: the Romería takes place on the first Sunday in May, while the patron saint festivities are held on August 6 and 7. If you plan to go on the circular hike instead, take changing terrain and access conditions into account as you prepare. First decide which experiences will shape your trip, then look for a hotel to match.
