Higuera de la Serena brings together architectural history and local traditions with a landscape long shaped by the use of water. In town, a stroll through the streets and visits to the church and chapel reveal different facets of its history. For a more active outing, you can plan the PR-BA 176; the festivals, meanwhile, offer a distinct insight into local crafts and customs. You can shape your stay around whichever aspect interests you most.

Church, Chapel and Townscape

The Iglesia Parroquial de la PurĂsima ConcepciĂłn (Parish Church of the Immaculate Conception) originally dates from 1489 and was remodeled in the 17th century. Its single-nave layout is divided into five sections, covered by a lunette vault. These details give the church a distinctive architectural profile: its history includes both its early origins and its later alterations.

The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Altagracia (Chapel of Our Lady of Altagracia), dating from the 15th century, reveals another layer of history. According to local tradition, the image of the Virgin appeared at this site. An adjoining building may have served as accommodation for pilgrims. Here, local tradition sits alongside a possible former use, presented as such.

The town’s streets are also part of the exploration. They feature examples of vernacular architecture, including whitewashed houses with granite surrounds. A stroll through Higuera de la Serena also offers a chance to connect with its people, culture, traditions and popular festivals. If you prefer to explore without a set sightseeing itinerary, a walk around town is a way to take in these varied impressions.

Water Landscape and Hiking Trail

La Laguna tells the story of traditional water use: it served as a watering place for livestock, especially sheep, goats and cattle, and was also traditionally used for fishing. Nearby are fertile gardens with wells, water basins and individual waterwheels. These details draw attention not only to the water itself, but also to its former role in livestock rearing, gardening and leisure.

The pools formed by the Río Guadámez are about five kilometres from Higuera de la Serena, along the Camino de los Quintos de Guadámez. This is a different destination from the water landscape at La Laguna: La Laguna is best understood through its traditional uses and the surrounding gardens, while the pools along the Guadámez are described in terms of their approximate distance and a named route.

For a hike, consider the Senda de la Ermita de Altagracia (Altagracia Chapel Trail). The PR-BA 176 starts and ends in Higuera de la Serena; it is 15.7 kilometres long and classified as either a linear trail or a circular route. This makes it easy to distinguish the hike as a separate activity from a stroll through the streets. The Dehesa Boyal San Isidro is set up for romerĂas; the RomerĂa de San Isidro also includes a procession through the Dehesa of Higuera de la Serena.

Festivals and When to Visit

Several events offer practical points of reference when planning a trip. The Matanza Didáctica (Demonstration of the Traditional Slaughter) takes place on a Saturday before Holy Week. The Encuentros de Encaje de Bolillos (Bobbin Lace Gatherings) demonstrate how bobbin lace is made; the gatherings also include a popular market with crafts and products from the municipality and the region. This combines a craft demonstration with an insight into local and regional produce.

Holy Week includes the “Los Abrazos” procession on Wednesday. The festivals therefore offer different timing cues: the Matanza Didáctica takes place on a Saturday before Holy Week, while “Los Abrazos” takes place on the Wednesday during Holy Week. If a particular festival is the reason for your trip, check the exact dates for your travel period. The Romería de San Isidro, in turn, combines a procession through the Dehesa with local customs.

For a culture-focused stay, the church, chapel, townscape and events offer different perspectives on Higuera de la Serena. If you’d also like to hike, you can include the 15.7-kilometre PR-BA 176 as a separate activity. The water sites and gardens round out these options with a glimpse of traditional landscape use.
