A castle with a dungeon and a vaulted cistern, buildings with Renaissance and Gothic features, and routes of varying types shape what Herrera del Duque has to offer. When planning your stay, you can focus on culture, festival dates, water activities or trails: which one should define your visit?
Cultural Heritage and Festival Traditions
The Casa del Conco dates from the 17th century and is historically linked to the Encomienda de Alcántara. Its surviving features include mosaics and the remains of old stables. The castle also has distinctive historic details: its walls and interior remains have been preserved, including Gothic elements, a dungeon and a vaulted cistern.
The Iglesia de San Juan Bautista is distinguished by its three vaulted naves and Renaissance-style interior; the church is documented as early as 1483. The Convento franciscano de la PurĂsima ConcepciĂłn was founded in 1517, moved to its current site in 1603 and is a Renaissance building. Arcades frame the historic square, the Plaza Mayor. There stands an octagonal fountain made of polished black jasper, built in 1787.
Behind Peloche, Bronze Age rock paintings depict hunting and pastoral scenes, animals and idols. They add another perspective on the area's past to its architectural history. Escarapuche, a fish dish originally from Peloche, a village within the municipality of Herrera del Duque, is part of the local food culture.
The Fiestas Patronales de San Antonio Abad in Peloche have been recognised as an Asset of Cultural Interest of particular cultural significance since 2022. During the last four days of the novena, beginning on 14 January, the Danza de San AntĂłn is performed in full in the church. Canutos, a traditional festival sweet, are prepared and kept for sale on 17 January. Herrera del Duque celebrates its patron saint's festival on 8 September; it includes a procession and an auction of mangas and traditional sweets. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these dates, check the latest event dates and whether Canutos will be available that year.
Water and Landscapes Around Peloche
The Playa Natural de Peloche lies on the Guadiana in Peloche, within the La Siberia Biosphere Reserve. Its clean, warm waters are suitable for swimming and a wide range of water sports. Check seasonal beach conditions before your visit. At Playa de Peloche on the Embalse de GarcĂa de Sola, there are two boat ramps; activities there include fishing, kayaking, paddle surfing and recreational boating.
The paved area of Playa del EspolĂłn offers fully adapted access for people with reduced mobility, lifeguard and surveillance services, showers, public changing rooms and picnic areas. The Sierra de Peloche is designated as both a ZEPA and a ZEC in the Natura 2000 network; the protected area is known for its rich birdlife and biodiversity. Check the applicable access rules before visiting.
Choose Routes by Type and Length
The Sendero Portillo del CĂjara is a 19.40-kilometre circular route for walking and cycling. It starts at the Casa del CĂjara in Herrera del Duque. The route includes the Mirador del BĂşho and the Mirador del Portillo de CĂjara, both of which have visitor information facilities. As this infrastructure may be undergoing maintenance and trail conditions can vary, it is worth checking conditions briefly before setting out.
At 22.20 kilometres, the Ruta Palacio del CĂjara is longer and linear; it can be completed on foot or by bicycle. The route passes the Palacio–Castillo de CĂjara and offers views of the Guadiana and the Embalse de GarcĂa de Sola. The two routes differ in their layout: a 19.40-kilometre loop and a 22.20-kilometre linear route. Their distances and formats give you a concrete basis for deciding how each trail fits into your plans.
Another route, 7.5 kilometres long, starts on the Camino de Las Navas off the N-502. From there, it offers wide views of Herrera del Duque, Peloche and the RĂo Guadiana, as well as opportunities to spot birds and animals typical of the region. Those interested in cycling routes can also try the Herrera–Peloche cycle path, which connects to the Campamento Alfredo Rivas. The Camino de Levante de PeregrinaciĂłn a Guadalupe runs from Fuenlabrada de los Montes through Herrera del Duque and on to Castilblanco in the Comarca La Siberia. The options described therefore differ in both their layout and focus.
The dehesa-dotted peneplain is a characteristic landscape of Herrera del Duque. Together with the protected areas, trails and water activities, it offers a range of themes to consider when planning your trip.
