Fuenlabrada de los Montes is nicknamed “pueblo de la miel” (the honey village), a reference to a centuries-old beekeeping tradition passed down from generation to generation. For trip planning, this theme goes hand in hand with historic buildings, the Corpus Christi celebrations in June and outdoor activities.

Honey and the character of the town

Eight varieties of honey are produced in Fuenlabrada de los Montes: “Miel de Mil Flores,” “Miel de Brezo,” “Miel de Romero,” “Miel de Tomillo,” “Miel de Azahar,” “Miel de Eucalipto,” “Miel de Encina” and “Miel de Bosque.” This variety makes beekeeping a tangible local specialty. The varieties offered by an individual producer may vary.

Buildings and festive traditions

In the Plaza Mayor stands the Fuente de la Niña, also known as “La Niña” or “La Morita.” The bronze figure, or fountain, dating from the 19th century, depicts a girl with a swan. The Iglesia de la Asunción de Nuestra Señora is a 16th-century church that combines Mudéjar, Gothic and late Romanesque styles. The church contains an altarpiece by Juan de Holanda and Diego de Aguilar. Its architecture and furnishings offer two distinct ways to explore the building.

Beekeeping is also represented in public spaces: beside Parque de la ConstituciĂłn stands the Monumento a los apicultores, a sculpture depicting a beekeeper at work. At the entrance to the town is the Rollo de Santa Ana, a medieval granite column that once symbolized the fact that the town had its own legal system.

Corpus Christi, celebrated in June, is an important festival in Fuenlabrada de los Montes. The streets are decorated with sawdust pictures and messages, altars are set up in the town center, and hand-embroidered cloths are hung from balconies. Early in the morning, the local “diablos” appear to wake the residents; they also offer lupini beans in exchange for donations. If you are planning to travel for the festival, check the exact dates for your travel year.

Landscapes, trails and beekeeping knowledge

The 861-meter-high peak of Cantos Negros is in Fuenlabrada de los Montes, adding a scenic dimension to the town’s cultural offerings. One nature trail is the SL-BA 199 Senda de la Pretura, which leads to the La Pretura area, where a short botanical footpath runs along both banks of the Río Guadalemar. The route includes recreation areas and sections with boardwalks. Trail conditions may change, so check the latest information before setting out.

Another kind of outdoor attraction is the Pretura del Molino. This natural swimming area has picnic spots, barbecue facilities and toilets; it is also suitable for fishing. Facilities may be maintained seasonally. If their condition is important for your visit, confirm it in advance.

The Museo de la Miel is about three kilometers from Fuenlabrada de los Montes, in a landscape near Monte del Acebuche. It presents the history and tradition of beekeeping, beekeeping practices, hives and hive products, as well as honey production and the importance of bees to biodiversity. Visitors can experience three beehives in one of the rooms. Visits are possible by appointment; check the arrangements before you arrive.
