Puebla De Alcocer can be explored through several clearly distinct themes: the castle and church reveal different building phases, two walking routes can be compared by length, and the museums focus on different subjects. This lets you weigh up culture, routes and possible festival dates to plan your stay.
Castle, Church and Architectural History
The Castillo de Puebla de Alcocer was built in the 12th and 13th centuries. In the 15th century, Gutierre de Sotomayor, Master of the Order of Alcántara, had the castle remodeled. The Iglesia Parroquial de Santiago Apóstol also offers a distinct perspective on the town’s architectural history: the Romanesque-Mudéjar church dates from the 11th and 12th centuries, and its frescoes span the 13th century and later periods. The Castillo can be reached on foot. As access conditions may change, check them before your visit. The castle offers views of the Embalse de la Serena.
Two Walking Routes with Different Destinations
The Ruta del castillo de Puebla de Alcocer is an approximately 1.5 km circular route along the historic climb from the town to the Castillo. The Subida al punto Mira is an approximately 3.8 km circular route to the “Rachado” geodetic point and is rated moderate. The routes therefore differ both in length and destination. If you are looking for a shorter route, the Castillo route is the shorter option; the longer circuit covers more distance and has a moderate difficulty level.
Museums: Exhibits and Local History
The Museo del Gigante Extremeño is located in the rooms of the Casa de la Cultura de Puebla de Alcocer. It comprises three rooms: two exhibition rooms and an audiovisual room. On display are large circus posters, almost four metres high, a replica of AgustĂn’s walking stick, and a pair of boots given to him by King Alfonso XII. Visits to this museum must be arranged in advance; please schedule your visit beforehand.
The Museo Etnográfico is located in the former cellars of the Convento de San Francisco. It displays historical and archaeological materials, as well as an ethnographic exhibition about the municipality of Puebla de Alcocer. The two museums therefore offer different emphases: the Museo del Gigante Extremeño focuses on specific exhibits and an audiovisual room, while the Museo Etnográfico presents material on the municipality’s history and ethnography.
Festivals and Cultural Events
San Isidro is celebrated as a local festival on 15 May. The day begins with a procession from the Convento de San Francisco to the Ermita de la Laguna; the current programme may vary. On the evening of 19 January, Las Luminarias de San Sebastián is celebrated in honour of Saint Sebastian, with large bonfires in every neighbourhood. The current programme may also vary.
For Corpus Christi, children and adults decorate the streets with floral carpets and carpets made of sawdust or salt; the date varies each year. The Mercado Medieval takes place every year by the walls of the Castillo, though the dates vary. Noches del Castillo features cultural performances in the castle courtyard; dates depend on the programme. If you are travelling specifically for a festival or performance, check the relevant dates in advance.
Birdwatching and Local Details
Puebla De Alcocer lies within two birdwatching routes: “Embalse de Orellana y Puerto Peña” and “La Serena y Sierra de Tiros.” This adds a distinct birdwatching focus to the town’s architectural history and walking routes. Another dated detail of the town is the iron gate at the Fuente de Oñamira, which bears the year 1903.
