Extremadura reveals natural history and cultural heritage on very different scales. In the southeast of the province of Cáceres, the UNESCO Global Geopark Villuercas-Ibores-Jara covers 2,544 square kilometres. Its highest point, Risco de La Villuerca, reaches 1,601 metres. It is also a geosite and geological trail; from here, panoramic views take in the characteristic Appalachian relief. Geology is more than just a backdrop here: the named trail and geosite provide a tangible focus for the landscape.

Landscapes from geoparks to wetlands

Other natural areas reveal different sides of the region. The 150-hectare Moheda Alta peri-urban park, protected and used for recreation, brings together dehesas and grain fields with pastureland, olive groves, riverside forests, and bodies of water such as reservoirs, rivers, and streams. In the La Siberia extremeña Biosphere Reserve, large reservoirs shape the landscape and form beaches and natural swimming pools; the area also includes forests, pastures, dehesas, and olive groves. Here, the range extends from open waterscapes to wooded and agricultural landscapes.

Birdlife offers another way to explore the region. The ZEPA Arrozales de Palazuelo y Guadalperales, between Cáceres and Badajoz, is home to internationally significant waterbird populations. The Tagus/Tajo International Biosphere Reserve is shared between Spain and Portugal. You can watch birds there; species include the Spanish imperial eagle, black stork, cinereous vulture, griffon vulture, golden eagle, Egyptian vulture, and Eurasian eagle-owl. Sightings vary by season and are not guaranteed. In La Siberia extremeña, possible activities include not only birdwatching but also hiking, cycling, boat trips, 4×4 routes, astrotourism, mushroom picking, and climbing. Providers and seasonal conditions may vary.

Roman structures and living history

In Mérida, the Archaeological Ensemble dates back to 25 BC, when Augustus founded the colony of Augusta Emerita. Another Roman structure is the Alcántara Bridge: it was completed around 106 AD and has six arches. Its dimensions are striking: 194 metres long, eight metres wide, and a maximum height of 71 metres. In Cáceres, the Torre del Bujaco is the best-known of about 30 towers dating from the Muslim period.

The Royal Monastery of Santa María de Guadalupe combines religious significance with architecture developed over about six centuries. It remains a pilgrimage centre for the Western world and Latin America. Traditions can also provide a specific reason to plan a trip: the Boda Regia reenacts a historical event in August in Valencia de Alcántara and the Portuguese town of Marvão. The event is recognised as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico de Extremadura. If you plan to attend, check the exact dates.

Trails, swimming pools, and regional cuisine

The Garganta de los Infiernos route offers a clear framework for planning your time: the marked circular trail is 16 kilometres long and takes about six hours. Weather and trail conditions can affect the walking time. The route to the natural swimming pools of Los Pilones is shorter: a 2.5-kilometre trail suitable for all ages leads there from the Nature Reserve Interpretation Centre. Swimming conditions may vary by season. This gives you a choice between a several-hour circular hike and a shorter walk to the swimming pools.

The EX-208 road also offers a scenic route: it runs from Villarreal de San Carlos, past the stretch near Arroyo de la Vid, to the gates of Monfragüe National Park, a Biosphere Reserve. Check road conditions before setting out. To learn about regional cheesemaking, follow the Ruta del Queso to farms and cheese producers. You can learn about the cheese’s origins and production and sample regional varieties. Depending on the experience, you may also be able to herd animals, milk goats or sheep, and make cheese; individual experiences may vary. Torta del Casar is considered one of Spain’s most sought-after cheeses.
