Monesterio combines pilgrim history and cultural heritage with museums dedicated to Iberian ham and mushrooms. The Dehesa of the TentudĂa region is also among the themes that define the town. When planning your visit, you can therefore focus on different aspects: history and religious routes, architecture, regional food culture or landscape.
The Way of St James and its historical context
The Centro de InterpretaciĂłn de los Caminos Jacobeos del Suroeste PenĂnsular offers pilgrims a welcome module, an interactive map and an audiovisual room about the Way of St James. It also features an interactive video about the Roman road of the VĂa de la Plata and a dramatised video about the Apostle James. This brings together information about the Way of St James and an introduction to its religious and historical world.
The historical context dates back to the Middle Ages: Christian pilgrims from the south of the Iberian Peninsula travelled along the VĂa de la Plata on the Camino Mozárabe to Santiago de Compostela. This long history of the route gives the subject a temporal dimension that extends beyond its individual presentation at the interpretation centre.
Museums dedicated to ham and mushrooms
The Museo del JamĂłn focuses on Iberian ham. In Monesterio, it is considered an emblematic product that is central to local identity. The museum also introduces visitors to the Dehesa of the TentudĂa region and explains customs and rituals associated with the traditional slaughter of Iberian pigs. The subject therefore ranges from an important regional food product to cultural practices and the landscape.
The Museo MicolĂłgico de Monesterio is the first museum of its kind in Extremadura and is located on the ground floor of the local silo. Its three halls explore the life of mushrooms, their habitats, and their uses and sensory properties. The multisensory, inclusive and interactive introduction focuses on the mushroom world of the TentudĂa region. The two museums offer different perspectives: the Museo del JamĂłn links a product with customs and the Dehesa, while the Museo MicolĂłgico explores the world of mushrooms and their properties.
Architecture and protected cultural heritage
The Iglesia de San Pedro Apóstol has a ribbed vault of Gothic tradition above its main altar. The term refers to a type of vault whose surface is structured by intersecting ribs. This architectural detail offers a distinct perspective on the town’s architecture.
Another cultural heritage site is the Conjunto de Huerta, Noria y Cocedero de Altramuces on the Finca La Cabra in the municipality of Monesterio (Badajoz). Since 2012, the complex has been protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest in the category of Lugar de Interés Etnológico. This protection status sets the site apart from the museum themes and church architecture: the focus here is a complex classified as an ethnological site.
Landscapes along the routes
The routes can also be distinguished by the landscape features described along them. The Ruta del Camping passes through a Dehesa and by gardens. The Ruta de MontemolĂn runs from an area of olive and fig trees through the Dehesa in the Piedrapatá area. If you are looking for particular landscape features, the gardens on one route and the olive and fig trees on the other offer specific points of reference.
On the Ruta AguafrĂa-Castillo, signs for the Mirador del Castillo appear at a sharp left-hand bend. Access to the upper viewpoint is restricted. Before setting out on the Ruta del Camping or the Ruta de MontemolĂn, check the trail conditions.
Practical information
The Oficina Municipal de Turismo is located in the Museo del JamĂłn and provides information about transport, active tourism, guided tours and tourist routes. Check its opening hours before visiting.
