Falkenau an der Eger District lies in the Czech part of the Czech-Bavarian Geopark. Travel ideas range from a royal castle and mining history to porcelain, religious buildings and nature. When planning, it helps to first decide whether cultural history, technical insights or outdoor experiences should be the main focus. The places and themes below each offer something different.

Mining History in Krásno

The Hornické muzeum Krásno presents the history of regional ore and coal mining, as well as the history of Krásno and its partner municipality of Bischofsgrün. On display are locomotives and wagons used in underground mines and lignite open-pit mines. The museum thus offers insight into different forms of mining. It also includes a demonstration mine that visitors can enter. The museum is located in the Vilém tin mine, which was established during the First World War.

Castles and Historic Buildings

Loket Castle is a royal stone castle more than 900 years old. It stands on a granite massif surrounded by the Ohře River. Its description brings together two distinct features: the stone castle and its location in a bend of the river.

Horní Slavkov also offers several points of cultural and historical interest. The first Czech porcelain factories were founded there in 1792. St. George’s Church is a Late Gothic building dating from around 1520; a Trinity Column dating from around 1700 stands in the square. A circular stone structure from the 16th century has been preserved on Gallows Hill. The town coat of arms on it bears the year 1598.

Town History in Sokolov

A Marian column dating from 1701 stands in Sokolov’s Old Square. The restored Capuchin monastery, with the Church of St. Anthony of Padua and the Nostitz Crypt, has a different character: the complex serves as a concert and exhibition hall. A single monument in the square and a complex of buildings used for cultural events thus offer two different ways to explore the town.

Nature, Water and Cycling

The Moučné pytle Natural Monument near Cihelny offers rock formations and views reached after a climb. The remains of the Late Romanesque Church of St. Nicholas lie below Krudum, with an observation tower nearby. Michal, near Sokolov, offers a different kind of outdoor experience: this natural swimming area has a long sandy beach, a water slide and other attractions.

Another regional option is a recommended cycling tour from Sokolov to Karlovy Vary. It runs via Sokolovské moře, Krudum and Jelení vrch. The route is described as a connection between the two named towns, not as a loop. Anyone including cycling in their travel plans can make this specific tour a focus of their trip.

Different Travel Priorities

The activities differ clearly: the museum focuses on exhibits and an accessible demonstration mine; at Moučné pytle, the climb, rock formations and views go together, while Michal focuses on swimming.
