If you want to combine cycling with town history, Königsberg an der Eger (Kynšperk nad Ohří) is a place whose setting is shaped by the Ohře. The town stretches along both banks of the river. Here, the Ohře crosses the eastern part of the Eger Basin before entering the hilly terrain that separates the Eger Basin from the Sokolov Basin. The riverside setting and surroundings give your stay a clear geographical context; at the same time, the town is a stop on the Ohře Cycle Route.

Town Gate, Castle and Architectural History

Kynšperská branka is a two-storey town gate whose present form dates from the 16th century. Its adjoining timber-framed and log-built structure once served as a Jewish prayer room. Kynšperský hrad castle also has several layers of history: archaeological research dates its beginnings on Zámecký vrch to the 13th century; it was probably rather small. The abandoned castle later became a ruin, and its masonry was gradually dismantled for building materials.

The two-storey Panský dům stands at the upper end of 5. května Square (Market Square). The building was constructed as a Renaissance town hall in 1586; today it is a Baroque building. The Church of the Saviour was completed and consecrated on 8 December 1905, based on plans by Stuttgart architects Eisenlohr and Weigle. It is an unusually pure example of the Neo-Romanesque style and has been used by the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren since 1946. If you would like to visit the church interior, check access in advance.

Brewing Tradition and Cycling

The brewing tradition of Kynšperský pivovar dates back to 1595, when Emperor Rudolf II granted the town the right to brew beer independently. Kynšperský pivovar offers tours of about 40 minutes with beer tasting; check the current visiting arrangements before your visit.

The Ohře Cycle Route is a good option for cycling. A 56-kilometre section runs from Cheb via Kynšperk nad Ohří and Sokolov, continuing towards Karlovy Vary. It runs mostly on dedicated cycle paths and quiet side roads; most of it is paved. The distance gives you a practical section to use in planning. As surfaces can vary locally, check the latest route information before setting off.

Countryside on the Edge of Town

The varied terrain around Kynšperk nad Ohří offers opportunities for hiking, water sports and cycling. The Nad rybníkem Sýkorák nature trail on the edge of town provides a special connection with nature: it introduces visitors to the flora and fauna of the forest and pond. The description is based on information published in 2020; details may have changed. Check the route information before visiting.

If you are looking for a hotel in Königsberg an der Eger, plan your stay around your main interests: the 56-kilometre stage offers a different focus from the architecture and brewing tradition. This will help you decide whether cycling or town history should shape your stay.
