The Libava stream flows through the valley and gave Liebauthal its name. This brings three distinct topics together for trip planning: the history of Kolová, Cycle Route 2246 with a section explicitly rated as difficult, and a bus service connecting several places. These facts answer different questions: What shapes the town’s history, what challenges does one section pose for a cycling trip, and which places does the bus service connect?
Kolová and the History of Liebauthal
The history of Liebauthal dates back to the 9th century. The historic Slavic hillfort of Kolová was located on the hill of the same name above the confluence of the Malá Libava and Velká Libava. The fortified hilltop settlement is listed as an immovable cultural monument in the central register of monuments and has an outer and an inner ditch. Its period, protected status, and ditches describe different aspects of Kolová: its early history, its listed status, and a specific feature of its fortifications.
The founding of the municipality is dated to 1824, when Baron Lenek established a textile factory in the Libava valley. This founding date is distinct from the 9th-century hillfort: one refers to an industrial foundation in the valley, the other to a historic Slavic hilltop settlement. The two dates thus mark different stages in the town’s history.
Čertův mlýn (Devil’s Mill) also forms part of the historical context. The inn had been attracting many day-trippers and summer visitors since the beginning of the 20th century. The former Čertův mlýn stood on the edge of the Kolová settlement, not far from today’s Kynšperk prison; the mill building no longer exists. The inn and the former mill site are two separate historical points of reference, even though they share the same name.
Cycling and Taking the Bus
Cycle Route 2246 runs between Kolová and Kynšperk; the section from Penzion u Čertova mlýna to Liebauthal is part of this route. This section is rated as difficult and is suitable only for mountain bikes. The rating applies to the specified section, not automatically to the entire cycle route. Before setting out, check current trail conditions and take the difficulty into account when choosing your bicycle.
Public bus route 480207 connects Sokolov, Šabina, Liebauthal, and Kynšperk nad Ohří. The timetable is valid from January 1 to December 31, 2026. For travel after this period, please check the timetable then in effect. When planning your journey, both the places listed and the timetable’s validity period are relevant. For the cycle route, the mountain-bike restriction applies to the specified section; for the bus, the timetable’s validity period matters.
