Falkenau an der Eger (Sokolov) offers a range of options for a trip: a castle with a regional museum, protected churches, a lookout tower and a natural swimming area. Water and greenery are also part of the town’s character. When planning, consider whether you are mainly interested in architectural history and exhibitions, or whether you would like to combine these with an outdoor excursion.

Sokolov Castle and its history

Around 1730, the grounds of Sokolov Castle were laid out in the style of a French garden with elaborate sculptural decoration. The castle itself is a two-storey, four-winged building with four towers. A fountain stands in its enclosed courtyard. The architecture makes it a point of interest in its own right, even without a set sightseeing itinerary: the wings and towers define its exterior, while the fountain is another striking feature of the courtyard.

Since 1960, the castle has housed a museum with regional exhibitions. Its themes range from minerals and porcelain to flora and fauna, the Nostitz family and the history of modern mining. Nature, regional culture and the development of mining are thus brought together. Visitors wishing to focus their stay on history will find several different subjects under one roof; it is advisable to check current opening hours in advance.

Churches and cultural monuments

The Capuchin monastery complex of Saint Anthony of Padua is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic and includes the Church of Saint Anthony. Following its reconstruction, the church serves as a concert and exhibition hall. This cultural use complements the complex’s historic character; as the programme may change, check for current events before your visit.

The Church of Saint James the Greater also offers a close look at religious architecture. It is a rectangular, single-nave building with a west tower, presbytery, sacristy, chapel and gallery. The protected complex also includes steps, an enclosure, statues of Saint John of Nepomuk and Saint James, and the associated grounds. The protection therefore covers more than the church building alone.

Views, water and greenery

The Hard lookout tower is a replica of the original tower from 1907 and was built in 2000–2001. It reopened to the public in 2001. Fifty-five steps lead to the top, from where there are views across Sokolov and the Ore Mountains. Check current access information before making the tower a firm part of your plans.

Lake Michal is a natural swimming area created on the site of a former open-cast lignite mine. Alongside the historic buildings, this offers an excursion destination in a landscape shaped by mining. In central Sokolov, Husovy sady is a significant landscape feature. The park preserves part of the former castle garden and former pheasantry, including ponds and other bodies of water.

The Ohře and Svatava rivers meet in Sokolov, and the Lobezský potok stream also runs through the town. The Městský okruh cycle route passes through Husovy sady and can be extended to the natural swimming area at Michal. If you include this route in your plans, check local route conditions in advance, as they may change.

Plan your stay around your interests

When choosing a hotel, you can first decide which aspect of the town matters most for your trip: the castle and museum, the protected churches, the lookout tower, or the combination of park and cycle route with the swimming area. This lets you tailor your search to your preferred focus without turning the individual destinations into a fixed itinerary. If you would like to combine several themes, you can treat culture and landscape as separate elements and plan around the current visiting conditions for each.
