Bukwa (Bukovany) offers two distinct ways to explore its history: agriculture and hop growing as historical livelihoods, and mining, which transformed the settlement landscape. At the same time, the former Libík–Medard open-pit mine site near Bukovany is being reclaimed. Visitors planning a stay can therefore explore local history and a changing landscape as separate points of interest.

Landscape and Cycling

There is a viewpoint on the northern edge of Bukovany from which you can observe how the landscape is changing. A note dated May 20, 2009, describes access at the time as follows: the viewpoint was not accessible by car; visitors could park by the cemetery and walk the rest of the way. Check conditions locally before your visit.

Cycling is another practical way to explore the area. You can ride a mountain bike along a former railway spur towards Medard. The beginning of the route is overgrown, so check local conditions before setting off.

The Mostov–Loket section of National Cycle Route No. 6 provides another point of reference. The recommended approach is to take the road from Dasnice towards Bukovany and turn right at the end of the village. As conditions may change locally, it is advisable to check the route before setting out.

The two cycling descriptions help with different planning questions: one mentions a road approach in connection with National Cycle Route No. 6, while the other describes a mountain-bike ride along a former railway spur to Medard. When choosing, take into account both the type of ride and the local conditions for each route.

Hops, Mining and Local History

Bukovany was first mentioned in writing in 1304. Coal mining in the surrounding area began in the mid-19th century. As the mining fronts of the Gustav II and Gustav III open-pit mines advanced, old Bukovany was destroyed, as were Kytlice and Dvory. Mining is therefore not only a chapter in the area's economic history, but also part of the history of its settlements.

Agriculture and hop growing were among the area's historical livelihoods. A distinctive reddish hop variety, comparable in quality to Saaz hops, was once grown in Bukovany. Another chapter in the area's mining history is iron ore extraction: the ore was supplied to ironworks in the Krušnohoří.

Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests

To decide whether Bukwa is right for your stay, you can consider its themes separately: local history spans the first written mention, agriculture and hops, through to the effects of open-pit mining. The cycling information, meanwhile, distinguishes a recommended road approach from a mountain-bike ride along a former railway spur. If you are looking for a hotel in Bukwa, this distinction can help you decide what to focus on during your stay. When planning a bike ride or a visit to the viewpoint, take the relevant information about conditions into account.
