Douglasgrün combines a history of settlement with two marked cycling routes. The routes pass through the town; the historical dates shed light on different phases of settlement. When planning your visit, you can therefore consider history, cycling and walking as separate interests. Vřesová is the Czech name for Douglasgrün, so the cycling routes can be associated with this destination under that name.

From the original village to an industrial settlement

The original municipality of Vřesová ceased to exist in 1958. The present-day settlement grew out of houses built for workers at the Palivový kombinát 25. únor Vřesová. The former municipality and the later settlement therefore represent different phases in the town’s history.

The first part of the Palivový kombinát Vřesová to be brought into operation was a coal-crushing plant, which opened in 1965. A pressure gasification plant began operating in 1969. The two dates mark different stages in industrial history: coal crushing was followed by pressure gasification four years later.

The town’s earlier history includes a simple chapel dating from the 19th century. It was demolished in 1959 along with the original buildings of the settlement and no longer exists. The historic settlement was located on the road from Chodov to Jindřichovice. The dates refer to different events: 1958 marks the dissolution of the original municipality, 1959 the demolition of the chapel and buildings; 1965 and 1969, by contrast, mark the commissioning of facilities in the industrial complex. This sequence distinguishes the end of the earlier settlement phase from subsequent technological development.

Cycling and navigation

The 2024 municipal plan lists two marked cycling routes through Vřesová: No. 2043 Vřesová–Stříbrná and No. 2227 Vřesová–Přebuz. Both start at the “Vřesová – rozc.” cycling signpost at the junction of roads III/21035 and III/20912. You can distinguish the routes by their numbers and destinations; the signpost at the junction is their shared point of reference. Check route conditions before setting out.

Walking and sports

Finding your way on foot is different from following marked hiking routes: no marked hiking trail passes through Vřesová. The main pedestrian routes run along road II/222 on separate footpaths. In addition, a footpath through the countryside connects the “rozcestí” bus stop with the Sokolovská uhelná, a.s. transport depot. The historical road reference concerns the former settlement; the footpaths along road II/222 serve a different navigational purpose.

The sports field in Vřesová is equipped for tennis, small-sided football, football tennis, basketball and volleyball. The list includes both tennis variations and ball sports. If a particular activity is important to you, check its availability specifically, as this may change.
