Lanz (Lomnice) combines a cycling route rated difficult with a mining history that is also reflected in the layout of a colony. Other highlights include St. Giles Church, a plague monument and landscape features shaped by deep mining. When planning your trip, you can focus on cycling, industrial heritage, church architecture or nature—without combining these distinct topics into a single route.
Cycling Route 2044: Course and Rating
Cycling Route 2044 passes through Lomnice and over the Lomnická spoil heap. It is rated difficult and suitable for trekking and cross bikes. The course, difficulty level and the specified types of bicycles are the main points to consider when choosing the route. The rating is a specific distinction to take into account when planning, rather than choosing the route solely by the names of the places it passes through. Cycling enthusiasts will find that Lomnice is indeed crossed by a named cycling route; the route also goes over the Lomnická spoil heap.
Mining Colony with a Horseshoe-Shaped Layout
The Lomnice mining colony was built in 1921 for the miners of the Köstner mine, later called Jiří. Its houses, with mansard roofs, are arranged in a horseshoe shape around a central courtyard. These features give the colony a clearly defined architectural character: its origins point to the miners and the mine, while its layout can be described in terms of its roof design and arrangement. A visit to the colony therefore brings social history and architecture together, without needing to separate the two topics.
St. Giles: Dating, Styles and Roof Structure
St. Giles Church in Lomnice dates to the 13th century. Its architecture combines Gothic, Renaissance and Empire styles. It also has a preserved roof structure consisting of three sections, considered the oldest identified roof structure in the Karlovarský kraj outside the city of Cheb and the Chebsko region. This gives visitors several distinct aspects to consider: the church's date, its combination of different architectural styles and the special status of its roof structure. The regional limitation is an important part of the claim: the superlative does not apply without restriction to the whole Karlovarský kraj.
Column and War Memorial
The Morový sloup commemorates the plague epidemic of 1633; it was erected in 1681. This early Baroque granite remnant has a destroyed upper section. Its history and present condition can be considered together: the column preserves the memory of a specific event in the community, while its surviving form also reflects the monument's fragmentary state.
Another historical monument is the war memorial to Lomnice and Týn. It was ceremonially unveiled on 14 July 1920 below St. Giles Church. In 1937, it was moved to a park on the village square in front of the old school building. The unveiling and subsequent relocation mark two distinct stages in its history; the church is the reference point for the first, and the village square for the later one.
Landscape South of Lomnice
The Lomnické pinky are located south of Lomnice. Their shapes were formed by subsidence caused by deep mining. At the same time, they create diverse habitats with different microclimates. Here, the landscape is directly connected to the history of mining: deep mining shaped not only the history of the place, but also these landforms and the habitats that developed as a result. Nature is therefore a distinct focus of Lanz, alongside its cycling route and architectural history; it is based on the landscape described, not on any claim that specific animal species have been sighted.
Getting Around by Road
Road No. 210 connects Lomnice with the nearby E48. The E48 runs from Cheb via Karlovy Vary and on to Prague. For orientation, it helps to distinguish between the road connecting Lomnice to the E48 and the course of the E48 itself. Together with the cycling route and local attractions, Lanz offers several concrete options for planning a stay—depending on whether you want to focus on the colony and monuments, the church, cycling or the landscape.
