Neusattl combines architectural history with railway tradition and a variety of landscape themes. The contrasts are particularly striking: a pseudo-Gothic half-timbered church built predominantly of wood, an older stone Baroque chapel, an artificial multipurpose reservoir and views of the Družba open-cast mine. This gives you several distinct points of interest to choose from if you would like to make architecture, railways or the landscape the focus of your stay.

Architectural history in wood and stone

The Church of the Ascension of the Lord (Nanebevstoupení Páně) in Neusattl was built predominantly of wood in 1904. As a pseudo-Gothic half-timbered church, it features elements of Art Nouveau and folk architecture. Several aspects therefore come together in its architectural classification: half-timbering describes the construction method, while pseudo-Gothic, Art Nouveau and folk architecture refer to different design vocabularies. Pseudo-Gothic draws on Gothic forms; the other elements add further influences to this classification. The building can thus be considered both in terms of its construction and materials and its design.

The stone Baroque chapel provides a contrast. The Engel family had it built in the first half of the 18th century; it was fully reconstructed after 2006. The chapel’s exterior areas are accessible. Compared with the church built in 1904, the chapel is notable for its earlier construction date and use of stone. Its reconstruction adds a later chapter to its architectural history. Those interested in sacred architecture can compare different periods, materials and design approaches. The chapel is also in Neusattl.

Reservoir and open-cast mine as landscape themes

Anna Reservoir offers a different point of interest: it is an artificial multipurpose body of water covering 4 ha, equivalent to 40,000 square metres. The “Pískový Vrch” viewpoint, by contrast, offers views of the Družba open-cast mine. The two landscape features differ clearly: at the reservoir, the focus is on its artificial construction and size; at the viewpoint, it is on the view of the open-cast mine. If you would like to include landscape themes in your travel plans, you can choose between a body of water and a view of an open-cast mine.

Railway tradition and current operations

For railway enthusiasts, it is worth distinguishing historical significance from current operations. The historic railway line from Nové Sedlo to Loket is considered the oldest local railway in the Bohemian lands. Railway line No. 144 runs through the area between Nové Sedlo and the municipality of Krásný Jez; today, the Loket–Nová Role section is in operation. These represent two different travel interests: the history of a railway line and the practical question of which section is currently operating. Before travelling by train, check the timetable for the section you plan to use.
