Uckermark has more than 500 lakes as well as thousands of small ponds, kettle holes, bogs, streams and rivers. The Uckermärkische Seen Nature Park lies amid this landscape of abundant water and gently rolling hills. With its clear-water lakes and bogs, hiking trails, museums and cultural venues, the region offers a range of options for your trip.
Lakes, bogs and landscapes
The Uckermärkische Seen Nature Park is home to many clear-water lakes, kettle holes and bogs. Its landscape also includes terminal moraine ridges, hilly ground moraines, drumlins, ramparts, inland dunes, channel lakes and flowing bogs. This variety makes the nature park a destination in its own right for travelers looking to combine time in Uckermark with landscape and nature.
The Lower Oder Valley National Park lies on the eastern edge of Uckermark. It is directly connected to the Oder River and neighboring Poland. Accompanied by certified canoe guides, you can paddle along several routes through narrow oxbow lakes of the Oder from May or July through November and explore the aquatic landscape. These guided tours offer a different way to experience the waterways than the water trails in the nature park.
Plan hiking and water trails
The nature park offers more than 150 kilometers of water trails and over 600 kilometers of signposted hiking trails. Across Uckermark as a whole, 1,200 kilometers of designated hiking trails are described. If you are looking for a route with clearly defined stages, the Märkischer Landweg is another option: stretching 217 kilometers over ten stages, it crosses Uckermark and passes through three National Natural Landscapes.
The regional hiking trails, the routes in the nature park and the stages of the Märkischer Landweg offer different scales for planning a trip. You can decide whether hiking should define your stay or form just one part of the itinerary alongside nature and cultural experiences. The water trails, in turn, offer a distinct focus. This lets you choose according to your interests without automatically combining different trails and places into a single route.
Railway history, art and culture
The Gramzow Railway Museum displays historic railway vehicles from different periods, as well as exhibitions on track construction, railway workshops, operations and transport services. Technical equipment can be seen outdoors and inside the buildings. On operating days, you can ride in historic railway vehicles and try driving a handcar yourself. The museum visit therefore includes both exhibitions and the chance to experience railway vehicles in motion.
The heritage-listed Gramzow granary is now an art venue for photography, language, literature and concerts. In Prenzlau, the Cultural History Museum in the Dominican monastery presents an extensive collection of medieval objects. Its main areas include religious sculptures, archaeological finds from Seehausen Monastery and objects relating to legal history. Visitors interested in different aspects of cultural history will find a focus here that differs from the railway exhibitions in Gramzow.
Boitzenburg Castle is considered the largest castle complex in the Mark Brandenburg outside the royal palaces of Potsdam and is surrounded by a Lenné park. In Lychen, the raft festival is held every year along the Oberpfuhl promenade. Both days feature an entertainment program and hands-on activities for children and adults. If you would like to include the festival in your trip, check the event dates for your chosen travel period.
Match hotels to your travel interests
If you are looking for hotels in Uckermark, your travel interests can be a useful starting point: would you like to focus on nature and trails, or are you particularly interested in railway history, art, medieval collections or castle architecture? First decide which of these topics matter for your stay, then compare the location of your accommodation with the places you plan to visit. If you are planning to attend a festival or take a seasonal canoe tour, it is also worth factoring the event dates or the stated time period into your plans.
