Uckermark: Landscapes and Trails
The Uckermärkische Seen Nature Park lies amid the lake-rich, gently rolling Uckermark region and encompasses many clear-water lakes, kettle holes and bogs. The nature park’s landscape features also include terminal moraine ridges, hilly ground moraines, drumlins, ramparts, inland dunes, ribbon lakes and flowing bogs. The Uckermark as a whole has more than 500 lakes as well as thousands of small ponds, kettle holes, bogs, streams and rivers.
Waterways and walking trails cover different areas: the nature park offers more than 150 kilometers of waterways for paddling and over 600 kilometers of signposted hiking trails. The Uckermark has 1,200 kilometers of designated hiking trails. Another regional route option is the Märkischer Landweg, which runs for 217 kilometers in ten stages across the Uckermark and through three National Natural Landscapes. For your selection, this means that waterways for paddling, signposted hiking trails and a cross-region route divided into stages offer different ways to explore.
Culture and Experiences in the Uckermark
In Gramzow, the Railway Museum displays historic railway vehicles from different periods, as well as exhibitions on track construction, workshop operations, and railway and transport services. Technical installations are located outdoors and inside buildings. On operating days, the Gramzow Railway Museum’s railway offers rides on historic railway vehicles and the chance to drive rail trolleys yourself.
The listed Speicher Gramzow is now an art venue for photography, language, literature and concerts. In Prenzlau, the Cultural History Museum in the Dominican Monastery presents an extensive collection of medieval objects. Its main areas include religious sculptures, archaeological finds from Seehausen Monastery and objects related to legal history. The two museums have different focuses: Gramzow centers on railway and technology history, while Prenzlau focuses on areas of its medieval collection.
In Lychen, the Rafting Festival takes place every year on the Oberpfuhl Promenade. On both days, it offers an entertainment program and activities for children and adults to take part in. Boitzenburg Castle is considered the largest Brandenburg palace complex outside the royal palaces of Potsdam and is surrounded by a Lenné park.
Water Experiences on the Oder
The Lower Oder Valley National Park lies on the eastern edge of the Uckermark and is directly connected to the Oder River and neighboring Poland. Accompanied by certified canoe guides, visitors can explore the waterways from May or July through November, following several routes through the Oder’s narrow old channels.
When looking for a hotel in Oberuckersee, you can first decide whether the Lake Tour’s local connection matches your preference for a specific place to visit, or whether you would like to broaden your choice of destination to the wider Uckermark region. If the railway or the Rafting Festival is important to you, check the respective operating days or festival dates in advance.
